I had the chance to buy my mate's m3 evo for 2.5k back 2008. Instead I bought an Audi S6 2.2 turbo- a week later the engine blew up. As far as cars go, that was my biggest regret.
That M3 was soooooo quick
He was either giving it away or it was a shed. I looked at them around that time and good ones were 2 or 3 times that. As for the CSL how many of those were sold in the UK ?That M3 was soooooo quick

But it was due a service, and the ultimate worrying factor was that the rear suspension had dropped. So new suspension was factored in to the price. I had a pretty bad history of buying sheds(money pits), so steered clear of the m3.
Turns out, the only thing wrong with the suspension, was that the rubber in the mounts had perished, two were purchased from GSF for about 25 quid. The car sold on ebay for about 4k.
It'll be interesting to see what interest I get in mine, which is a 100k 2000 model.
I've loved owning it and am probably selling at the bottom of the market, but needs must.
They're very capable every day cars - I've covered 30k in 2 years and it's never let me down. That's not to say it's been cheap; At that age/mileage there are a few common jobs which will need doing. Mine's had new discs and pads, radiator, air con condensers, brake lines, suspension refresh, some kind of clutch seal, replacement of all the turbo brackets and heat shields etc and that's without thinking about tyres and cosmetic stuff like stone chip removal and alloy refurbs.
That said, the depreciation on a normal car would have cost the same and would have been far less fun!
Certainly the quickest B road car I've had and by no means dull in comparison to the TVRs/Maserati. I'll be back in a 911 turbo one day, though I suspect iI won't be able to get a non-auto then...

Amazing the difference in opinions here! 1 guy thinks a stock 996 looks better than a turbo, personally I hate them (lookswise) a lot think the 997 interior is nicer, myself and a lot of others hate the plasticky look, I really hate it)so just goes to show diff strokes for diff folks, as for bottom of the market well that was prob close to 2 years ago, I got mine black/black 6 speed with full OPC history for 20K and just after bought a black 2000 6 speed with black ruffled leather needing clutch and accumulator for 14K on 19" turbo wheels.
As for a narrow body looking better IMO no
Engine out for a few days to fit new fuel system, injectors and GT28 ball bearing turbos

May as well wait for 997 TT to bottom out. They are making tons of those. Plus they are better looking and faster.
I agree, I'd wait on the interior alone.GekkoRules said:

Really hoping to jump into one of these within the the next twelve months.
Have they risen that much? As I seem to remember seeing them as low as £25K and 911Virgin has one for £28K.
To be fair I'm basing my prices on 911Virgin/RSJ prices.

Prefer the 997tt myself but wonder if the rise of the 996tt prices will push the 997's up, although there are examples of 996's overtaking the 997. Just seems to be a crazy market in general at the moment with Porsches.
Yep some weird times ahead. But simple market forces will determine value. If high vol 996 go up AND 997 go up, whose paying for so many expensive old cars?
You increasingly just buy even newer cars for a bit more as they're much better value.
The reality is there are bubbles lurking.
I think, as a few others have noted, the boat has been and gone on the 'getting in early' idea. It's years past.
All you do now is risk losing money imo, as the 997t show no signs of levelling out at strong 996t prices already.
But I've been known to be wrong

Aren't there some glued together coolant pipes buried in there that need replacing or welding ?
Yeah but I cant be bothered to do them, Im building a forged 3.8 and they are all being done while its in bits, to do them all is a lot of work and if you only do 80% whats the point. Spoke to Matt @ Fearnsport and he has never seen one that has actually let go even though I had one let go in the engine im using for the rebuild !!!LK
I thought there were 100 UK turbo S cars total but I read something today that said that was just the Coupe's.
I do know that the majority of Cabriolets were Tip and the majority of Coupe's - manual so the rarest are the tip coupe or manual cabs.
All I would say is don't buy one unless you intend to drive it like you stole it, I can't think of any greater waste!
I have never experienced another car that rewards as much for being driven flat out like the 996 turbo, S or not - 5 or 6 speed...
Secretly I think the 997.1 will ultimately fare best as they are the very last of the Metzger engines. They're less involving to drive though.
To wrap up as an investment; 997.1 turbo,
To drive; 996 turbo S
