Glad to see plenty of french design in this thread. I'd nominate this from recent years.

It's the 205.

Even in bog standard spec, even now, those proportions are just so right. A triumph of simplicity.

Only PHers could have such a 'broad' interpretation of hatchback... hehe

Or perhaps the concept of the coupe is a regional thing and they are simply known as hatchbacks elsewhere! scratchchin

Great pics though

I know this is an entirely subjective thread but I can't help but roll my eyes when the Astra J GTC is nominated the best looking hatchback ever. Best looking hatchback ever?! Really?! Bloated, bland and boring and with too much fake chrome. And yes, I know that you could say this about the majority of modern cars but FFS, come on.

It is a tricky question to answer (even trickier than to give the prize to the Astra!) but I think the MK2 Golf GTi 16v with big bumpers has to be a strong contender. MK1 Focus RS, 147 GTA, Brera, Clio Williams, V6 Clio, 205 GTi, 306 are all worthy of a mention too. Plus the GTC4 Lusso smile

However most of the ones you have mentioned are the cooking versions and the none cooking versions aren't exactly great looking. Will however agree the base model 306's looked good and personally think they look better than the current Peugeot offerings.

Yeah that's true smile

Agree with what you've said about the current Peugeot range though - they're pretty poor.

The correct answer.
The underlying design whether on steelies or alloys, red stripes and fog lights or just pauper-spec - the 205 wins for me
Closely followed by the 93' Honda Civic
Both designed by Pininfarina
And then the Mk 1 Focus in 3rd.

I think the OP had it pretty much spot on in the OP.

E-Types, Ferraris and 4Cs in a hatchback thread?! Call me hatchist.

205 for me too.

I saw an immaculate looking one being driven in Madeira last week, still looked great.

How about these sexy machines?

This one is stunning in BL Flamenco Red

My Dad had one of these in this colour as a company car

Am I doing this right?

For what its worth, I think that the FF is a hatchback but the 4c isn't.

Yes! They are so right, I would love one, shame there's no 3.0 v6 petrol

The Anniversary looks a lot better than the bland GTI.

I'll agree. The Anniversary is the best looking mk4 Golf. None of them are brilliant but those lower grilles under the R32 just look like a period aftermarket bodykit.

3-door mk1 Focus

Mondeo ST220

(Photos of my old one, may it RIP cry )

Proportions and lines of both are just so... right, in my opinion.
