RE: V8s are great!

V8 here. I love the noise a V8 makes. I've been very vocal about selling this, but I am becoming more tempted to put some money into and get it back to its former glory..
The fact that you have been vocal about selling it, but haven't done so yet is perhaps an interesting indication of that tug of the heart strings the car has - go on - do it up ![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)
just to encourage you

Hahahaha, honestly I am losing sleep over it! Thing is, I just don't know if it is worth doing with the amount of money I know I need to spend on it. ![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)

realistically you are probably always better selling / adding the extra money and buying a more expensive one - let someone else have the cost of doing it... but... it depends if you want to improve 'your' car...CaptainRAVE said:
I love my V8 SLK55 - it is one of my favourite engines and one I aspired to own growing up. Great having it on an open top car too when you press the loud pedal ![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)
Such a shame the new 'SLC' AMG is a V6![frown](/inc/images/frown.gif)
I liked that biturbo 3 liter V6 in both the SL400 and the SLC 43 AMG. A V8 is unbeatable but hell, that 6 is a crisp thing. Drove both roadsters for a few hours and had bags of fun. I'd choose the SL400 over a 911. ![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)

Back to the V8 theme. Aston X-pack V8, late 70s or early 80s ow yeah.

I have been looking, but there aren't many face lift cars for sale. I cannot be bothered to go through the hassle of making a preface lift car into a face lift, just not worth the hassle. The choices are sell and get E55K (still V8) or keep and make nice / modify.

Yes it does - my intravee would be kinda pointless on a none face lift car. I do not want to retrofit the 4:3 screen etc, plus my car has Mk4 nav. The face lift had extra air bags, supposedly better ring design on the engines, better front and rear lights (fronts are easy, rears less so to retrofit). A later car (I think after September 2001) had the better VANOS spring plates as well.
Fair points ![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)

difficult decisions!

A decent article this. In today's world, big N/A engines definitely need to be celebrated, regardless if they're actually any good or not. Funnily enough, if i was to pick out of all of these, it's actually the Lexus RCF that interests me the most, closely followed by the Mustang.
Obviously, the weight thing does seem pretty silly. But, as a road car, as Mr Harris said on his review, it just makes for a great car to have.. I love the proper coupe looks and styling and also that wacky interior. It's just something a bit different, powered by a sonorous, atmospheric V8.
Yeh, Lexus RC-F. A car that you can truly drive hard due to a bullet proof engine. Lexus engineering is just so good.Obviously, the weight thing does seem pretty silly. If you can't afford an RC-F, look at an IS-F. 90% of what the RC-F has, but available for silly money.

Unfortunately, i'm nowhere near the position to buy one, i'm afraid. I do keep looking at cheap V8 ownership though. Something like a 540i, for example, i keep considering.

It's in the garage for long tube headers at the moment, it did sound like this:

The problem with 90% of the V8s mentioned on this thread is that they are tied to an automatic gearbox

Not necessarily.....
Whilst I would agree that a manual is a MUCH more engaging drive, modern auto 'boxes are very good. With a bit of practice I found I could make the autobox's in my e39's do what I wanted with careful use of the throttle. Not to mention most (if not all?) auto's these days have some form of manual control.

Get one! You won't be disappointed, very satisfying cars to own. Don't discount the 535i either, having owned both a 535i and a 540i I found that the 3.5 car used just as much fuel as the 4.4 car and didn't have as much torque off the line but in real world driving there was very little difference between the two.
