Total bargain these pumas,I've had my 30,000 miler now for 6 months and it's so brilliant it's relegated my Panda 100HP which I've now sold which wasn't my intention as I loved my Panda but Puma won over.Ill admit it's not the most masculine looking car but it just makes me happy to drive, perfect amount of power for majority of situations, sublime handling, economical and a cracking engine,I have the seat vastly reclined which gives it a nice sporty feeling position,I own and have driven most hot hatches-sports cars and in my honest opinion you won't have any more fun than you can have in a looked after Puma I promise.

All those RPJ Fords are great. The Puma 1.7 adds the Yamaha motor on top, completing the recipe for a great drivers car.

What a great little car for so little money. Not really a shed at all, just a shed price.

I always fancied the 1.7 Puma, and in that blue too. If I was living in the UK I'd be more than tempted to buy this one.

Although Peugeot still had a few irons left in the fire when it came to the Puma/Fiesta class

The 106/VTS even outlasted the Puma although the Focus mk1 outlived the 306 by a fair margin

Be interested to read Felix's story on pickup
Rare to see a Ford getting such reviews on here! It's the fwd MX5

Even the Mondeos of the period were praised for their handling.

Seems a great buy, I actually bought the last shed of the week puma in 2016. Did two track days in it and loved every minute.

If someone is after a low mileage example give me a shout as I’ve moved to two wheels.

I remember going on a track day at Silverstone 20 odd years ago. The instructors were in pumas, punters in formula ford single seaters. We were all astonished at the corner speed those pumas could carry. Great cars, and a fantastic SOTW.

Can't ever deny the fact that even today, Peugeot still knows how to make a really good hot hatch.

Curse this SOTW, and this topic! It's now got me really thinking about keeping my eyes open for a cheap usable Puma if any come up locally. Only problem is I'm already thinking about what modifications I'd make if I got one, and I've enough on my plate with my existing 2 crappy cars.

But I remember when I had my first 205 GTI, I guess it was 18 years ago, a guy I worked with used to take the piss calling me a boy racer. His missus had a Puma as a company car and he couldn't stop raving about what an absolute hoot it was to drive. Like most people back then I just thought it was a girls car and that there was no way it could be a patch on my GTI. I'll never have another 205 now that prices are going the way they are but a dirt cheap Puma could be a way to get back some of that old school fun whilst being far more appropriate a first car for my wife when she passes her test, than my V70 T5.

What's there to mod though ?

brakes are a good call.

suspension they had sorted from new so just whacking on some coilovers is probably going to spoil the handling and that's what makes these cars the handling.

engine - to get anything out of a n/a engine is costly if you want more horse power it would be cheaper to just get a turbo car in the 1st place.

Bloomin lovely little cars - fabulous to drive.

Got mine brand new in Nov 2000, still got it, still drive it. Just the usual issues - melty steering wheel, heater pipe rotted, usual service items. 76k miles. Completely standard apart from an alcantra steering wheel retrim.

Not performance mods. I wouldn't see the point unless going all out on something like a turbo conversion. No, for me the main thing would be interior changes - get rid of the silver ste, swap the seats out for some old recaros or some reclining buckets, retrim the steering wheel or replace it with a nicer looking Sparco/Momo one and so on. But then I think with the amount of maintenance required to keep rot at bay and suspension in fine fettle it could end up keeping me very busy. Truth is I've never been much good at shedding, I find it hard to buy something and not get tempted in to making changes and improvements.

I think you're right - brakes would be worth looking at but it seems just standard suspension kept top notch would be hard to improve on for a small budget

I'm not sure a puma is a car is a car to sink money into when they all rust anyway.

Buy one with a long mot whack on some decent tyres and thrash the pants off it and enjoy it.

I've just bought one and so far done oil and filters , wheel bearing and a sticking rear drum brake , cambelt next i think so like you i'm not good at shedding smile

That's exactly my dilema. I totally agree that this is a car where you have to take the tough Shedding stance. But as tempting as it is I know I will fail miserably. Even if I could control myself and keep it bone stock I just know I'd end up chasing rattles and clinks and replacing all the suspension to get it handling perfectly, probably decent tyres too.

It's typical of PH that I read these tales of the amazing low mileage full MOT full SH ultra bargains that people have found and I get naughty thoughts, but these are "right time right place" bargains. I had a quick trawl through eBay, AT and Gumtree and nothing really stood out to me just now as being worth a punt.
