Old Man's car ?

I think Jaguars a few years back were all old mens cars. I think this is changing with their more modern cars.
Historically, only old men could afford them, like 911s, apart from a few yuppies. However, the cars were not just lovely, but fast. With massive depreciation, second hand, they are now affordable to folk outside the golf club set. If young posters look at this I say go for it, but don’t pay too much, and find a good independent garage! The old, low, elegant Jags are often “one elderly owner”, so if you can source one for a few thou, that silly tax and fuel cost becomes irrelevant .

The old man image doesnt have anything to do with the vehicles costs
It's a very PH-centric view that everybody automatically drives the most expensive car they can afford but the actual reality is far from that as there will always be a range of car buyers from those who'll quite willingly cripple themselves financially to put the most aspirational bling they can on the drive to those who could easily buy any car they wanted outright but choose to have a tatty old Shed instead. There's actually a weird pardox that kicks in as you get older 'tho, and that's the more easily affordable things become the less you actually desire them. Stuff like a newer car and better boat and nicer house I really, really wanted years ago that I couldn't afford at the time doesn't interest me in the slightest now that I can.
Rover 75 - old mans car.![yes](/inc/images/yes.gif)
Driven by men who bought one as a retirement present to themselves about 15 years ago and are now REALLY old.
Why did they choose it? Because when they were younger men in the 70's and 80's a Rover was still a relatively cool car - P6 3500 V8; SDi V8 - both Police cars for instance.
I drove one once, and almost fell out the car laughing at how cr*p it was.![biggrin](/inc/images/biggrin.gif)

I got grief for having an X-Type as daily snotter in my 20's. No idea why to be honest as it had the black grill and I thought it was quite a young man handsome car. Didn't thing the car deserved the press it got generally to be honest and much preferred its looks inside and out to the E class mercs and Beemers of similar vintage that I had considered.

That’s what everyone who drives an old Jag would say tbh. It’s called being old. I am 31 and constantly watching the XJ market. I like that it looks like an old mans car as I can tint the windows and waft around in total anonymity ![cloud9](/inc/images/cloud9.gif)
Something like this would suit me perfectly:-

Have a phwoar from me. I’m 27, and I’ve had my XJ (2011 poverty spec (see below)) since I was 25 - I’ve had no ‘old man’ comments, but I suspect it’s because I’ve got no friends...![cloud9](/inc/images/cloud9.gif)

Debating whether to man up and buy a petrol one next, or rather, whether to live with the fuel bill!

Glad to see I'm not the only bloke in his mid 20's who's after an XJ. Hats off to you for actually buying one though, I'm still in my old 75 Tourer. How do you find it?Debating whether to man up and buy a petrol one next, or rather, whether to live with the fuel bill!

Most definitely old mans cars, park a nice Jag in a car park and its only old men that will look at it, go to a Jag meet and those that can still get out of the house will likely be the wrong side of 60
It is what it is
My XJS gets a lot of looks and thumbs-up from the young hoodlums (PH-stereotype alert) of Bradford in their RS3s and Golf Rs ...It is what it is
It makes me smile but then parking it in Foster Square when all the other oldies are in Yaris' and Jazzes and similar makes me smile too

This thread was made for ElectricSoup I’m sure he’ll be along in a minute.
I’ve got a big wafty Jag saloon itch I’d like to scratch at some point. I’m 46 with white hair so reckon I’m just a golf club membership away from it being socially acceptable (scratch that, I can’t stand golf).
Only thing that puts me off is my Dad had an X Type when he retired and it was constantly back to the dealer with electrical gremlins. Perhaps just a Friday car though.
