RE: BMW lifts the lid on new 625hp M8 Competition
Discussion
Much alike the latest M5 Competition, this will be massively underrated but a properly fantastic car to run day to day. Great looks, abundant usable power, coupe/convertible options... the only thing not to like is the price. But as always with these types of cars, it'll be half price in 3 years time and hardly ran in!

Beautiful but why would you do this instead of a 911?
Unless you have a kink for throwing £50 notes into a fire
And Im a huge BMW fan

£30k less than a Continental GT, which I assume is its real competition, not the 911.
Those inset contrasting trim pieces look just awful.

Really? similar performance? I wasn't aware that RS'5 hit 60 in 3.2 seconds
0-62 in 3.9 (and clocked at 3.7 in good conditions).Performance is hardly all about 0-60 times. Power to weight is about the same. Doubt there'd be much in it on track, or in the real world point-to-point. So yeah, I'd say that's fairly similar.

Not being funny and I hate to be that guy, and it’s difficult to say this as I’m a life long BMW fan and love a good barge...BUT, after the amount of fun I’m having in my 24k 316bhp FWD Civic Type R, I look at cars like these and feel nothing anymore, 100k + (let’s be honest, nobody will pay list for one of these) 625 bhp, over 2 tonnes, what’s the point, it won’t even be fun to drive!
If I had the means or if my numbers came up, I’d definitely buy the 8 series as I’m a fan of its looks and imagine it would make a lovely long distance cruiser but I’d spend half the money and get the diesel model, no point in making a big car like that sporty. You wouldn’t have heard me say this 2 weeks ago when I had my 4 series.
On the topic of the 8 series, every single one I see has a reg that starts with ‘Y’, means it’s a BMW UK car, Still haven’t seen one with a reg other than Y, I think BMW are struggling to sell these.
I've not seen one yet and I work in the West End of London where you get a whole lot of posh cars. More surprisingly, I've barely seen any new 3 series'. Shouldn't there be thousands and thousands of 320d's on the road by now?If I had the means or if my numbers came up, I’d definitely buy the 8 series as I’m a fan of its looks and imagine it would make a lovely long distance cruiser but I’d spend half the money and get the diesel model, no point in making a big car like that sporty. My B9 RS4 was timed at 3.3s to 60mph at Rockingham. RS5 perhaps a tad quicker as lighter? Imho though the M5 Comp will duck under 3s to 60mph (gets to 100mph in 6.6s) with the same engined M8 not far behind given the larger mass.

Believe the M8 will be lighter than the M5.TX.

Thats a few options from a mclaren 540c, would be very strange for BMW to apply their usual 15-20% discount to such a high end car, but they'll have to at this rate.
They may cost similar (ish) but a 540C is a totally different proposition! Why are you comparing a mid engined 2 seater with a 4 seater GT car? Or is it because they cost the same? Seems a somewhat daft comparison to me. You wouldn't compare a Merc S class with a 3 litre diesel with a Lotus Evora, would you? Oily76 said:

Yep I like this plenty. Coming out of my XFR into a, now tweeked 135i convertible which is an absolute hoot, far quicker and pointier than I expected but if I were to venture back to a large car,in 3 years time this might tick the tick M box. I do fancy a junior super car in the next 2/3 years and R8 V10 is current top of this list as can't quick justify the cost of a 997.2 Turbo which is holding its money too well, however the convertible bug has taken hold and the 4 seat option here over the R8s 2 seats mean I might have a GT and leave the Super car (junior) box unticked. Will watch the used market with interest.
Extremely meh and samey looking as every other BMW nowadays.
No doubt will appeal to the nerdy, goofy type 'needing' 600hp to sit in ever increasing jams and continuously lower speed limits.
Ridiculous doesn't even come close.
189mph max?? Should have been rounded off to 200 at least and been done with it.
