ETA: what I really don’t understand is the car manufacturers say they are making cars bigger, because that is what customers say they want. Yet, the same customers are not buying the bigger cars, they buy the new models added at the bottom of the range that was added because the car above it became as big as the car above that. See VW Up > VW Polo > VW Golf > VW Passat.

Ford have just announced they are killing the Mondeo, why? It doesn’t sell, I very much doubt anybody will be surprised it is now bigger than the Granada/Scorpio, which funnily enough was killed off because it got too big and didn’t sell!

That M3 is lowered.

The Mondeo died because Mr Mondeo became Mr 3 Series/Mr A4/Mr C Class when PCP came along. Why have a Ford when you can have a German premium badge for not much more per month.

That's what i don't like about the C1/Aygo type stuff - rear seats are so close to the rear of the car - would not fancy being in one of those
Yep. My wife got hit from behind and punted onto the zebra crossing she was waiting at by a Golf a couple of years ago in her 500 Abarth. Damage was repaired and all was well.
It was only when a chap at work commented that she was lucky it wasn't an HGV that I started to consider the consequences. She had our kids in the back and their heads would have been in direct impact with the bumper of an HGV with only the rear screen between them. Scared me enough that we sold it a month later.

To answer the original question I think that even a current 3 series is too big. It’s near enough the same size as a 5 series from the early 90s: 11mm longer and 77mm wider:

Current G20 3 series length 4709mm, width 1827 mm
1997-96 E34 5 series length 4720mm, width 1750mm

Cars should be taxed on the amount of road space they take up, some multiplier of length x width.

Saw a new BMW X3 today and thought "fk that's big" so checked the dimensions and it's longer, wider and only 10cm lower than the original 1999 X5.

Just saying.
A 1 series is 3cm longer than my 1992 3 series silly

makes sense to get a h2 imo

especially the 6.2

Well, if you truly love your family you'll put them in the original and biggest, the H1

after all, anything less than a full-on military vehicle and you're not properly protecting your loved ones.

At only 184.5 in long they are about the same length as a Ford Focus Estate (183.8 in).

Quite wide though.

I parked next to new X7 the other day, now that's an unnecessarily large (and ugly) car.
Perhaps not if you need 7 seats and want luxury and comfort.

Which was longer than an E21, which is longer than a 2002.
For instance, the 1974 Golf Mk1 was 3.7m long and 1.6m wide. The 1994 Polo Mk3 was ... 3.7m long and 1.6m wide. By that time, the Golf Mk3 was 4.0m long and 1.7m wide.
Mk8 is 4.28m long and 1.78 wide - pretty much same growth Mk1-Mk3 as Mk3-Mk8.

If I won the lottery I’d love a H1 just for fking about, especially at merge in turns.

I drive an xc90, quite a large car, though there are larger around. I believe the MKII is bigger than the MKI.

Never had an issue parking it or driving it, never have I broken down in tears and screamed "I wish I'd bought a fiesta."

It weighs loads, which is good, because when some moron who can't drive anything bigger than a golf manages to run into me: I'll get out and phone the ambulance to come and scrape him off my bumper. 😂

we need more tax, a lot more. based on width, weight & length.
as an example, a base 5k annual tax for a RR, before considering co2 output.

I use a lot of minor roads and lanes near my home. The issue I have is that most drivers of fat SUVs just dont appreciate how wide their car is and consume most of the road and often dont really appreciate how close they are to a scrape as they fly past with no attempt to move over.

I default to our old polo for local journeys for this reason.

+ the nation is getting fatter. Mr or mrs average couldn't get into an elan or mg today.

People who buy big SUV are truly retarded smile These things have no place. Usually driven by females, you know to keep the little offsprings safe. fk everyone else on the road. I bet pedestrian will stand no chance on impact with X6. You can't park it anywhere, as it sticks out from the bays. I live in London and it's beyond me why they buy it for school runs. Slam 1000£ tax on them.

The correct answer is 2 cars. My Superb estate is great for lor load lugging, carrying dogs or bikes, or long journeys. Going into town with tight parking we use my wife's Mazda 2. Shortly being changed to something even smaller.
