This may be controversial, and as much as I love the QF with its Ferrari-derived engine, I wonder whether the 2-litre 276bhp model would give 98% of the enjoyment for a lot less cash.

The highlight of the QF is the engine, followed by the ride/handling, so very much doubt that.

The 2 litre is OK, but there is no comparison to be made at all. 98%? More like 60%.

What's more the fuel economy of the Quad is actually very good if you want it to be, not that far away from the 2.0.

Plus you can't turn any of the driver aids off in the 2.0 I seem to remember.

Erm. I doubt it. Different suspension set up, about 50% less power and a dreary 4 cylinder noise.

And it’s not even a lot less cash. There’s a reason why the QF sells well compared to the M3 while the regular saloon sells incredibly poorly compared to the 3 series. It just doesn’t make enough sense. Man maths is required!

A really good review.

I have a 2017 QV. I chose it after owning a Cayman , testing an M3, M2 and C63

It’s the best car I’ve owned. But you are right on the e-diff. It’s not consistent.

The damping: well, I find it exquisite. Maybe it’s because I drive on b-roads and use more road orientated tyres (Goodyear SuperSport rather than the OE corsas) but it retains poise and traction on an undulating road in a way that shades the too firm Germans.

The facelift does sound like they’ve made the perfect car for me, if not for the masses. I’m ok with that.

Didn't realise there were various types of squares......

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you've not had any cars with an interesting engine?

The QF is something special and desireable, the 2.0 280bhp car is totally "meh", and a great deal of that difference comes from the engine.

To be fair, there are different types of square (right angled, isosceles, 30 60 90, and 45 45 90), but a square square isn't one of them biglaugh

I was seesawing between the the 280 Volece and QV for a while. The 280 is not meh it's excellent. In my view handled slightly better than the QV due to a slightly lighter front and especially with 18" wheels.

But the engine and grip just take the QV to another level. It's a phenomenal car that cruises around like a normal cooking version then moments later performs and sounds like a super car.

For anyone interested, the MY22 configurator on the Alfa site is still accurate when it comes to options.

I've seen the facelift options list, and pretty much nothing's changed. Dealers are expecting their demo cars at the end of the year ... There was nothing in the info they've received pointing at a Q4 24 delivery date.

Didn't see anything claiming the security flaw is fixed.

Probably out of my comfort zone price wise now as the affinity scheme is all but dead. It made it reachable for me previously, but with the price increases and reduction in discount it means I'd be paying another ~£10k compared to my last one.

Nope.

Whats the affinity conditions/discount now?

i never knew about when i bought mine, but the 'character' at swindon alfa who i spoke to last summer mentioned it to me for my likely next one, and made out it would be a big discount, if we got creative - i don't qualify personally but those associated with me do, so wondering what it is. cursory googling reveals nowt.

It used to be about 17-20%, plus a bit of dealer incentive. My last car had about £12k off.

It's now a flat £5k if I recall, and prices have gone up again.

Derby Alfa have always been the most "creative" in my experience, but not sure they'd be able to put anything suitable together for me with that gap.

I was looking at getting a 4C a few years ago and I have to say that they worked really hard to try and make it happen, everything short of offering to come round to my house and cut the grass.

Then I drove it and went off the idea frown

Affinity discount is easy to get. There are a number of qualifiers but the easiest would be to join the Alfa Owners club, although I do think you have to have been a member for at least 6 months to qualify, but I doubt it will be an issue. It is also available for Blue Light type people and several other qualifiers.

My 2017 car was £60K after affifnity (when the terms were less and the car was newer) and my 2021 one was £63,500 with a bigger Affinity discount.

After selling the 2017 one for a good price at 4.5 years old it was cheap motoring.

It's been between 10 and 15% and usually you get more on the prior year car.

The latest price list (although states till 31st March, usually slow to be updated) is 13.5% off a MY 22 Quad and the MY23 Quad not yet listed.

16% off a 280 MY 23

Hope this helps.

It does frustrate when people quote the list price, although MY23 list price seems to have gone up quite a bit...

I have owned both the 276 and QF cars. I’ve had two Veloce’s but both with a remapped engine delivering 325bhp. Now that makes the Veloce a serious option, and so much quicker than standard, and with a 6250rpm red line. The 276 in standard form is breathless. But……after two Veloce’s, why did I buy a QF. It’s the better car! Full stop. No need for further debate. Have no illusion though, the 276 car is fabulous, and spec it with the QF suspension and 19” wheels… and get the remap for £400…..

I like the look of these. Front, back and side profile. It's so refreshing from the angry exaggerated grills on BMW and Mercedes.

I like the old version with the binnacles for dials. That gives it an individuality for Alfa.

Thank you John for the review. I enjoyed the write up. It's good to get the detail on the driving feel.

Was tempted to buy one of these a few years back but played safe and went for the m3 f80 instead.

It wasn't so much thst it'll turn to rust and fall apart after a few years, but more the support network for them in the UK.

Spoke to someone who worked fir Alfa at a relatively close dealership 6 months or so back and he said he wouldn't recommend them right now, as they're having a particularly hard time getting hold of parts since covid apparently.

Beautiful looking cars snd generally excellent reviews.
