I have a double cab Hilux "Invincible" on the path, now I know a Hilux <> Land Cruiser,
I went to a LC after two Hiluxes, they definitely feel very similar on and off road, which is actually a testament to just how refined and competent the HL is compared to its rivals. The LC is way more comfortable for passengers though, and the interior much nicer, but you can certainly sense the familial closeness.

front and rear lights are the only concerning thing, i feel like they'd be pricey to replace, and probably would need an entire unit if a bulb/led goes.

Until the Jimny returns, this genre is completely missing its pinnacle.

Toyota aimed for the Defender in design and crikey have they succeeded! Able to firmly stick to it's utilitarian routes and I'd imagine it's a better drive than the current one. I do prefer the square headlights though...

I imagine they'll sell pretty well compared to the current one.

I really like it and great to see the return of plastic wheel arch extensions.

Suspect as with the Jimny, early adopters will enjoy a very slow (or even negative) depreciation curve

200hp is low though
For a genuine off-road biased SUV it is enough. If most of your mileage is motorway based or you need big numbers for validation, then there are plenty of on-road focused more powerful offerings from VAG, BMW, JLR etc.

I have the current model with the 2.8 and while it could never be described as 'quick', it is adequate to keep pace with traffic, and get places.

I don't think Toyota are trying to poach any AMG or SVR buyers here, it's a different vehicle for those with different requirements.
Fair enough it’s not a performance SUV but for the price it will be I think the engine is a huge weakness.
Also, imagine towing 3.5t with it. yikes
For towing, you need torque (and the right gearing), rather than BHPs

Lots of ill informed comments on here of this being just a cosmetic redesign. It is in fact a brand new platform, the same one used for the 300 LC.

That said, the US is getting a more interesting powertrain than we do. The 2.8 feels a bit agricultural and underpowered. However I am going to enquire about one, I absolutely love Land Cruisers, and this one even looks good.

Cool, unlike the Anus Grenade.
And, obvs, it’ll be dependable, unlike anything from Solihull.
Now I'll never be able to see Jim Ratcliffe's nonsense without thinking of it as the Anus Grenade.

The front light changes do feel appropriate given the evolution of the 60 series.

This isn’t the proper new Land Cruiser. The LC300 series was introduce two years ago. This is a simply updated version of the current Prado (a face lift inside out with the same chassis and drive train). I know the real Land Cruisers aren’t sold in Western Europe. But Prado should be at least mentioned once in the article in order to let to let the readers know this isn’t the all new Land Cruiser. The difference between Prado and Land Cruiser is much bigger than the difference between RRS and FFRR, they have totally different chassis and drivetrains, whereas RRS at least shares the same chassis and drivetrain as FFRR…

Well said.
No it's not.

The 'Land Cruiser' has been a family of vehicles rather than a single model for decades, and if any is likely to be claimed to be the 'real' one, it would be the 70-series, beloved of mining companies, NGOs and terrorists. Further, this one is now based on the same GA-F platform as the 300.
Well said. biglaugh

Just a shame the round headlights aren't hanging around. They make for a much more interesting front end.
Looks like the US get the round headlights on the first edition and the basic model that they are calling the 1958 which has simpler electronics and manual / cloth seats. The square headlights are on the better spec version that they just call Landcruiser. Not sure what the UK are getting?

Really liking this. The hideous Grenadier is definitely in trouble. As are the plethora of soft readers. Anything JLR based, well roll the dice on if it continues to work each day. The Land Cruiser has always been the go to, but now It looks a whole lot better, it’s going to sell even better.

Looks fantastic, would buy of these in a heartbeat if I had the cash. Makes the new Def design look dated already.

I rather link that. I’ve found it increasing hard to find a car with buttons that’s built to last more than 3 yrs. Suspect I will be visiting the Toyota dealers when it’s time to change cars.

Looks great and I think Toyota have got it absolutely spot on...apart from that asthmatic 204 hp engine.

Absolutely no idea why they'd choose to fit an old underpowered diesel unit in an interesting new vehicle. Especially when the same vehicle in US spec gets a 4-cylinder petrol hybrid with 326 hp, which I would have thought would absolutely suit the UK market.

But that aside, it looks the part, will be incredibly capable and its longevity can probably be measured in geological terms.
