I quite like the dwarf, but yes - May is the shining star of TG.
He is the best of them. He had a very good review of the Rolls Royce drop top this episode.

He seemed fine in that review, though maybe a bit under the weather in the studio, I didn't really notice.

Perhaps the Beeb are kicking themselves for employing JM as RH and JC's punchbag, he is much stronger than that and could easily show up the other two, given the chance.

If it was unscripted you would see him at his best IMHO.

Wouldn't surprise me if he's totally pissed off.
Or recently pissed anyway. I suspect May has a drink problem
If he was turning up to shooting pissed it certainly would explain why the others have less time for him now.
A bit of a wild acusation there matey
Hardly an accusation, more a ponder on a suggestion, matey.

May has probably upset Clarkson by buying an old 911.
He got rid of the 911 in 2004 when he got the 987S - according to his Telegraph column he couldn't justify having 2 Porsches.
Are you sure? This article from the telegraph dated the 06/10/2007, suggests he has recently bought a 911.

He looked a bit teed off with the mickey taking. The guys a classical musician if I recall correctly, maybe he's seen through it all.
There was an edge about it.
James was giving out some pretty convincing signals.

Generally I think he looks a lot more stylish.
Check the shoes he had on when filming the RR segment. Very nice,he looked well turned out, nice jeans.
RH looks a bit gaunt IMO, and that whole shirt hanging out thing doesn't do anything for me Im afraid.

There were rumours last year James was on about a £40k [?] salary, and the other two far far more. Anyone update this ?
He had very nice shoes on and but "the whole shirt hanging out thing" does nothing for you?

Is this a serious post? What is this - Queer Eye for the Top Gear Guy?!

There's an even stronger rumour that you have no life, I would suggest.
Do you have an update on this?

Perhaps you could post 15mins of webcam footage here each week and we could all speculate on how well you dress, what you get paid and any inscurities you might have? What are "convincing signals"? Signals of what? That he needed the toilet? That he was dying for a cigarette? That he wishes he was more the alpha male?

May has always looked slightly aloof when having the mickey taken. More often than not his demeanour is that of the MHG I think.

Mental, truly mental stuff this.... headache

I too am getting a bit sick of seeing JC and RH taking the mickey out of James constantly. James is a bloody good journalist, and far wittier than the other two.

Yes, but nobody really believed that.

Though if you did, I may have an interesting business proposal for you. You share the same surname as a rich businessman whose plane crashed in Nigeria last year. He had no next of kin and, thus far, nobody has come forward to claim his fortune ($1,000,000,000,000), so if you pretend to be his relative you can have a 20% share of the fortune. All I need is your bank details...

May was on considerably less money than clarkson and hammond due to him not being a car critic or really being known at all before top gear.
Didn't he have a column in Car magazine in the mid 90's?

He admitted on TV that he smokes dope, can't remember where or when but I saw it. As did a pal of mine who now uses that one sentence to define everything James May ever did or does. "Oh look, it's the spliff-king"

During the early-1980s, May worked as a sub-editor for The Engineer and later Autocar magazine. He has written for several publications, including a regular column called England Made Me in CAR magazine and articles for Top Gear Magazine, as well as a weekly column in The Daily Telegraph. In 2000 he won the Guild of Motoring Writers Journalist of the Year award.

He has written a book titled May On Motors, which is a collection of his published articles, and co-authored Oz and James's Big Wine Adventure, based on the eponymous TV series.

He has also written the afterword to Long Lane with Turnings, published in September 2006, the final book by motoring legend L. J. K. Setright. In the same month he co-presented a tribute to Raymond Baxter. His book, Notes From The Hard Shoulder, was published on 26 April 2007. James May's 20th Century, a book to accompany the series of the same name, was published on 6 September 2007.

In August 2006, it was revealed that May has contributed to the online motoring humour magazine Sniff Petrol.[1]

smile Forgetting their pasts for one minute though, Clarkson is popular and, let's face it, a breath of fresh air in the politically correct world of modern TV. Hammond is a cracking presenter, who is interesting to listen to and genuinely enthusiastic about what he does. James May is a superb journalist who just so happens to be great on TV. I think the whole team are superb, but I wish that they'd work better as a team, without forcing their differences too much for theatrical effect.

Great episode tonight. I like Hammond and May, but wish they played a bigger role in the show. JC is a schmuck who know's little about cars and his interviewing skills are subpar. Without all three of them though, the show wouldn't be as good.
I dont think JC is a schmuck as such but he does confess to know sod all about the mechanics of cars (remember building the Caterham?) and he is RUBBISH at getting the best out of the guests, his interviews dont flow at all well. I think youre right though, whatever you think of the individuals, as a team they equal more than the sum of their parts.

I'm wrong again but I'm sure he used to have an old 70's 911 something or other maybe in brown?

Anyway, it's all scripted and agreed beforehand, no point getting upset on May's behalf.

James May once got interviewed about his cat, Fusker. He finished off with one of the nicest things I've heared in a while:

"All in all he's not very loyal, he's a ruffian, he's not very bright or well-bred and
he's not a very useful cat. However, he has the soul of a lion and I love him."

Bless him.

I remember that from somewhere, but a bit of puff isnt going to cause any major problems, just make him more chilled out biggrin

I hope May stays, I for one would be less inclined to watch the show if he wasn't on it. He seems a very genuine fella, with a good knowledge of cars and a keen sense of wit and to be honest there are plenty of times when I'd rather listen to him than the other two.

Also have you noticed also that whenever they do a challenge or anything like that, May always gets the 'sh1tty' cars like the Aston N24 with no air con etc...

Now I know the sarcasm troop will be out in force on this saying, 'boo hoo poor James being bullied by mean Mr Clarkson and his Hamster', but put yourself in Mays shoes, if you were ridiculed regularly at work and constantly given the sh1tty tasks you'd soon get fed up with it too.

I think top gear are missing a trick, James should be given a regular slot on the show to talk about older cars like, the old v8 vantages from the 80's etc... this would be both interesting and right up his street. Instead we get to watch the same type of acting the @rse week after week, remember what made top gear good, it was a real car program for real car nuts, it isn't anymore. They are trying too hard to please everyone and are ending up pleasing very few and I'd imagine losing viewers in the process.
