RE: BMW 135i First Drive
Discussion
My old M3 E30 Cecotto was a fantastic drivers car which BMW seem to have forgotten about. M3 V8's appeal to one type of driver, but if BMW want to appeal to a younger audience surely a 2 litre 16v or even the 2 litre diesel with SMG and around 1200kg would work. I'm currently driving an A3 tdi S-Line with DSG which is a great looking car but without the driving appeal of yesteryear. There's a gap there waiting to be filled.

I can't believe how heavy this car is, its not that good looking either. I'm also disapointed to see BMW still following VW Audi in there quest to fit detuned engine with low presure turbos. Still I guess with a remap it should definately produce the goods...
I just can't get over the weight issue though...

So, let me compare the 135i to the E30 M3.
In comparison, the 135i is a far more luxurious coupe, bigger, hugely more powerful 6 cylinder, twin-turbocharged engine, with all the safety bells and whistles, with higher spec chassis components, and yet weighs just 200kg more than the E30 M3.
Bit of a result really!
And let me repeat the fact that this thing is RAPID around the N'ring!

looking at it again it is stunningly ugly, what a dog of a coupe, looks like someone has photo shopped it to make it look even more ugly!
BMW Coupe's have always had a very simple flowing good look to them (at the time) old 3.0 csi, the gorgeous 635 csi's, E30 2 door, E36 and E46 couples all had a lovely looking shape, so even the base level cars looked nice.
now they are just plain ugly.

Erm, I don't think it has sequential turbos like the TT diesel, just 2 small ones driven by 3 cylinders each.
ETA: I notice it has proper fixed calipers fitted. That's a bit of a new direction for BMW, certainly on smaller mainstream models. Even the new M3 has sliding calipers AFAIK.
Yes it does have 2 small turbos feeding 3 cylinders each. It's how it manages to be so responsive and boost so low down the rev range.ETA: I notice it has proper fixed calipers fitted. I also noticed the fixed callipers! They look like 6 pots too... It's about time they sorted out their brakes, Audi aren't perfect but they stand up to a lot more than BMW.

Did anyone mention the weight?
If you want a stripped out shell buy a Caterwestvort or do you want car that will cosset you , that will protect you in the event of an accident , and still be good in 10 years time ... jezzus you minimalists what planet do you live on , 1500kg is about normal today As someone said earlier it has all the bells and whistles a 300 ps twin turbo engine and it is 200 kg heavier than an original M3 Cecotto what is wrong with that
Or are you just another BMW hater

and you've probably not seen one in the flesh yet.
The car has presence but like a lot of Bangle cars it is wheel size and colour sensitive. It drew a lot of (positive) interest on the BMW stand at the Brands Hatch WTCC meeting.
So what colour & wheels would you choose? The car has presence but like a lot of Bangle cars it is wheel size and colour sensitive. It drew a lot of (positive) interest on the BMW stand at the Brands Hatch WTCC meeting.
Does it have the over-stiff ride from the run flats?
Is the 123d a better buy? The figures look very similar, and you could add the M-sport kit as an option (not sure I would).

i am torn between a 123d coupe with all the trimmings or a 320d coupe with moderation on the options list , i think the engine from the 123d will shortly be updating the 320d Does it have the over-stiff ride from the run flats?

You all forget, BMW do sell a stripped out 1 series, it's even a diesel!
Ok so it's not cheap, but if you buy a cheap 1er in a few years then you know you can get the weight down quite a bit by dumping most of the interior

Powered by a 1,995cc diesel engine, the BMW 120D Motorsport provides 245hp and 450Nm of torque from its modified engine.
There are adjustable anti-roll bars front and rear as well as Sachs adjustable dampers all round and the race-bred braking system comprises 332mm steel discs with 6-piston AP fixed callipers at the front and 284mm steel discs with 4-pot AP callipers at the rear and the car rides on large BBS racing rims.
Inside, the car is stripped for racing to save weight, taking the Motorsport 120d racer's weight to just 1,135kg complete with driver (compared with 1,415 kg for the road version), and uses a BMW M designed carbon-fibre reinforced aero package featuring new flared front and rear mud guards, front apron and rear diffuser.
The price? The racing package for the BMW 120d costs 95,000 Euros plus tax, in addition to the on-the-road price of the ‘standard’ car. So probably near enough to £100000 all up There are adjustable anti-roll bars front and rear as well as Sachs adjustable dampers all round and the race-bred braking system comprises 332mm steel discs with 6-piston AP fixed callipers at the front and 284mm steel discs with 4-pot AP callipers at the rear and the car rides on large BBS racing rims.
