RE: Audi R8 V12 TDI

Although very well road tested by many mags, I think many real world punters with £90K to spend will see it as a fancy TT, which in turn is seen as just a fancy Golf. They want people to see that they've spent £90k on a car and I'm sure their chequebook will be opened at other dealerships than Audi.
Have you seen an R8 in the flesh? You wouldn't mistake it for a TT.It's a £78k car, which is £5k less than an Aston V8 (more badge prestige) and £5k more than a 911 4S (common, slower).
Personally, I'd take an R8 over either of those.
eta: I think Audi have been quite clever in positioning the R8 against the 911 4S. Motoring journos seem to have taken this line unquestioningly (par for the course). Who needs 4WD in a sports car? The 911 2S is faster, more practical and better value.

If that car can help establishing diesel-engines in the USA, we're all happy, aren't we?
It would drive up diesel prices, which is a good thing?AFAIK the reason that diesels are not popular in the US is due to NOx emissions regs, which are stricter than in Europe, and which current diesels fail on. This is why manufacturers are developing urea injection (which is taking the piss, IMO).

you cleary have never tried to buy one....whist the list price might be £78K, by the time you have put *any* spec on the car (as in to the equivalent of a Ford Focus/mundano) your getting on for £90K
Audi seem to have gone down the BMW/Merc of old route, screw you on the options...
Much as I like the R8, it's just not enough car for the money, put a V10 550+Bhp engine in it, it might just be worth the price-tag.
shandypants - calm down, im not ANTI diesel, i just think a supercar should have one engine per model really, audi and the others get a bodyshell and stuff in loads of engines, they "claim" its a "special" car, no its not going to be anymore its going to be a normal audi with lots of engine options. why cant they just leave at least one car in there fleet alone.
you dont see lambo thinking mmmMMM fuel consumption, no as its a supercar not a every day car. (then again now audi own them get ready for a murci electric version & diesel, just to keep the hippies happy)

AMV8 will be £90k without starting on the silly options and I just managed to add over £10k of options to a C4s without really trying. BMW are no different for options either.whist the list price might be £78K, by the time you have put *any* spec on the car (as in to the equivalent of a Ford Focus/mundano) your getting on for £90K

911 C4S list is £72,995 so your starting from a point some 5K less and alrady is speced with full leather, etc etc.. (and that's before you talk discounts (impossible on the R8 at the moment)
don't get me wrong, I like the R8 (apprt from it's lack of power and understeer), but it's just not value for money compared with the 911 (and I am no Porsche lover either).
I wish I could afford any of these cars to be honest, but surely if you can afford a car that's £72k+ you can afford the other £5-15k to get either an AMV8 or R8, again maybe I'm wrong about that, just seems to me if you have a high enough income to buy any of these cars one the overall price probably isn't a huge concern. If people were that concerned about the cost I doubt they'd be in the market for a new car like this anyway.
kambites - lets not go down the 911 route LMAO, very very very fast cars but only a few are special lets say, but pork dont stuff small engines in them or good mpg engines, there all mental engines.
i understand car manufactuers have to lets say sell out nowadays to survive and thats a shame, in the next 10 years we will all be driving very very fast saloon cars and not much else, or nice looking cars (that should be "super" with lower bhp to suit pottering round town.
im just dont like the whole vw group taking over the whole world and getting one chasis and putting 4 bodies on it that all look the same and putting a different badge on it. then go and buy another company and take there chasis and do it again. all cars will look the same soon.

This R8 proves nothing except you can put a big engine in a big car. Whoopie bloody doo!
But surely thats what any supercar does..... Its difference is that it is a diesel, people may not like that but at least they're trying something different.Edited by NightDriver on Tuesday 8th April 18:53
I don't get why that is exciting or impressive next to any other car...

Well a supercar is judged on more than the engine. To me it makes no odds if it's petrol or diesel, it's just a powerfull R8.

If you don't understand why a new, powerful engine in one of the best super-sports cars ever made isn't exciting, I don't think you're on the right website? I don't get why that is exciting or impressive next to any other car...

Personally I'm looking forward to 99% of cars on the road being diesel, it'll just make the petrol cars even more special. It nice enough now when a Ferrari or Lamborghini flies past with *that* exhaust note. Just think what it will sound like when every other car on the road is making either no noise or a mild clatter clatter.
Little kids will be shouting at their dads, "What's that!!!!" and the Dad will be saying with a tear in his eye: "That's a petrol engine son. I used to have one of those."

It seems most interest revolves around the fact it's a TDI.
Take that away and it's just a blinged up more powerful R8. And?
Just like the blinged up more powerful Nissan GT-R on PH news the other day.
Until anyone drives the proper one I'll reserve judgement of course, but my point is that being diesel shouldn't elevate it to be more impressive than it is.
Giving a diesel extra kudos for being diesel is almost like admitting that diesel isn't good enough to start with. Let it be judged on it's own merit as a car full stop, not giving it extra credit already because of it's fuel type.

It's not just fuel type, it's forced induction too.So we have the amazing conclusion that a turbocharged 6L V12 gives more performance than a naturally aspirated 4.2L V8.
Who'd have thought it?
