And what might I ask, were you driving instead? My first Marina cost me £100, it was only 7 years old but it was severely dented. My mates borrowed their Mum's cars, an Avenger, two Mini's, a Renault 12 etc, and when they did buy cars they were no better than a Marina.

NB: Is execrable a real word?

I'm still trying to get my head round the name of that forum:

Fast Marina Magazine

But Fast and Marina were never two words that I thought would go together. I will certainly think twice next time I pull up at a set of lights if ever there's a Marina sitting next to me.

While anyone idolising the marina is a bit concerning it was a real shame, it was a very tidy classic car, smashing it up was bad enough but how pointless was burning it out. Was even a shame about the lada.

I find it mildly funny when they smash up camper vans, or play football with little modern cars, but classics really should be left alone, or alternatively show the nice tidy one then destroy a rotten wreck that won't see the road again.
It might be old but it's no classic.

els bells. Learnt to drive in one of them. Didn't think people liked them. The only good bit I thought was the door handles. Guess a gear, gear box and point anywhere to go left steering. Loverly colour choice........

Oh well. Takes all sorts.

It's definately no classic - in fact it's about as far from the notion of classic as it is possible to get. Classic tends to imply value, either kinesthetic, visual, financial. This car has none of those qualities, at all. Horrible in every way

I bought a Marina estate once in harvest gold, i paid 50 quid for it, i got bored after half a day, i wound all four windows down about a quarter of the way, lit some fire lighters, threw them on the seats and watched it burn, it really was a st car and that was the best thing for it!
How extraordinarily ish.
Extraordinarily ish? This coming from a bloke that has a profile picture of a balding out of shape man standing in a childrens park!

Very,very,very strange.

Yes, it is a real word:

Adj. 1. execrable - of very poor quality or condition; "deplorable housing conditions in the inner city"; "woeful treatment of the accused"; "woeful errors of judgment"
wretched, woeful, deplorable, miserable
inferior - of low or inferior quality

Which I think is a fair summation.

In answer to the question, I have never had the misfortune of having to smoke around in a Marina. However, for my sins, I do happen to come from a family with four generations involved in the motor trade (including running a BL dealership during the appropriate period.)

Execrable would be a fair and balanced view I think.

That's not balding you tard it's a short haircut.

If you'd read any of the posts on here you'd know I am extremely hairy indeed and in extremely GREAT shape.

And if you think that pictures ish you should see the semi-naked in the changing rooms ones I posted some time back.

I'm sure someone will post the photoshopped one of me, in the meantime here I am fondling a dog:

A short hair cut, yes short at the front, either that or you have an oversized forehead.

You still feel obliged to have your photo taken in a childrens park and use it as a profile picture, no getting away from it that is just strange!

Well it's a good word, and you got the X on a triple-letter score so I think you're going to beat me at scrabble.

As a matter of interest, then, what do you think I should have spent my £100 on when I was 17? Ford's were quite a lot more money, as far as I can remember, I think I'd have had a 1.6 Capri if money had been no object biggrin

I have fond memories of my Marina. It was cheap to run, reliable and roomy. Yes, comparable Fords and Vauxhalls were better, but there were plenty of even worse cars available at the time.

Pathetic sad little man, i'm disapointed with myself for lowering myself to argue with you. Because of your insecurities we have between us managed to ruin what was a good thread.

P.S Has anyone ever told you that you look like Barry from Eastenders, but shorter?

Whether you liked it or not - the Marina sold in very large quantities and supplied BL with an income it so desperately needed between government hand outs.

Like the Metro - it was just a car that lived too long and never got replaced. It was only supposed to be a stop gap car but like most things BL related - it ended up having to live SO much longer than it was originally intended for. By the end of production (as the Ital) it was hideously out of date but when it was first launched it was easily comparable with the Ford Cortina. Basic RWD layout, 3 box saloon with a simple range of engines and trim levels. Its a little fact that the Marina was designed by Roy Haynes - the guy who designed the CORTINA mk2.

From austin-rover.co.uk this was supposed to be the replacement until money totally dried up

ADO77 was to have been BLMC's answer to the Ford Cortina Mark III, but unfortunately, the money ran out to develop the concept much further than this. This meant the Marina was forced to soldier on long after its sell-by date.

Same door handles I see. They continued in the Lotus Esprit and Range Rover for quite some time I think?
