RE: Polish Man Builds McLaren F1

...Apparently the Mclaren F1 prototypes used the Ultima chassis...
That's a slight exaggeration. A pair of Ultimas were used as development mules for testing components. They were Ultima's fitted with the McLaren gearbox or brakes, or whatever, rather than 'prototype' F1's (ie. they looked and drove basically like normal Ultimas, not like the F1).There’s a discussion on a carbon-tubbed McLaren F1 replica here, which will be faster, lighter, more sophisticated and better handling than the original.
…allegedly.

That is truely fantastic, I wonder how much its cost him to make it???
I'm sure V8 Thunder will be ablong to teach him to cadance-clutch to 70mph ![rolleyes](/inc/images/rolleyes.gif)

There's a V12 but if you look at the engine that's mounted in the chassis, that ones a V8.
I heard its a 1.2Edited by squareflops on Thursday 23 April 17:16

I like it. Compared to some of the tat we see this is actually quite pleasing. It puts to shame the miriad of stoopid student designs. This lad has at least put his money where his mouth is and dun it.
He needs to get a nice bird on top of it for the photos though!

That is his bird, she's an Iranian supermodel named Akmary. Apparently this is the only photo of her without her berka. He needs to get a nice bird on top of it for the photos though!

Just shows what you can do in your shed.
What an interesting article, but there may be an interesting explaination as to why this car looks quite as accurate as it does.....
According to an ex-employee of mine, who now works for McLaren, they aledgedly lost a pretty much complete set of moulds which were free issued to a 3rd party composite moulding firm I later reserected. They were used to manufacture components for the F1 GTR race car.
This particular gentleman was personally responsible for the manufacture of the GTR panels. When we did some work for the F1 project some years later, this guy told the story of the missing tooling and that all new moulds had had to have been made.
So perhaps the missing tooling made it to Poland?

Err thats pretty obviously a V8 engine, not a V12 and an automatic??
To be fair the exterior is nowhere near as bad as most of the dodgy replicas of Ferraris and I suppose at least the engine is in the right spot and it looks relatively proportionate, but that interior doesn't look to be shaping up too well.

What you have to remember is.. nower days you can get get 200+hp/litre easially, and 120hp/litre with reliability ( e.g the XFR )
erm, am I missing something?![confused](/inc/images/confused.gif)
AFAIK they come into the UK with far less than 400 Bhp. The vehicles are registered, the engines then pulled out and sent off for modification (at a company in Leamington Spa or Coventry, can't remember which),then refitted and the engine management is re-mapped, plus a few other mods - Yes it has a warranty covered by Mitsubushi - But they definitely DON'T come from the factory like that.
As for the F1 replica, fair play to the guy. What is it with the Polish, that and the Mercedes are both really good efforts

Yes. NOW. ![biggrin](/inc/images/biggrin.gif)
When the story went up and those comments were made, the only engine pic was of the Audi V8 that donated its transaxle.
The pics were updated.

They were brought to this country and modified to 400 bhp by some of the aftermarket tuners employed by Mitsubishi UK.
Interestingly enough the tuners claimed it was detuned to 400 bhp for warranty or political reasons and was easily capable of 500 bhp with just a remap, although similar cars tuned to that level have required a larger bore exhaust and freer flowing induction.
