god I love that interior.

people buying an M3, RS4 etc. aren't looking for the same kind of thing that a GTR owner is. The GTR is a total animal.

The more i look at it, the more i want one in black or dark blue, anthracite wheels, with that ^^^ interior.

Probably the best all-round everyday car this side of a 997 Turbo. Maybe even more so given the extra practicality.

Apart from the seats, what is so good about the interior?

Didn't you know Audi interiors are the best? Why would anyone need to form a subjective opinion by sitting in the car and feeling the materials etc when they can just look at a sideways shot showing the seats?

In the real world on a public road?

I disagree.
So which one did you prefer when you test drove them both?

Obviously Its a speculative opinion, as no one has driven the the RS5 yet, but based on the fact it's lighter, bigger brother with only 30 bhp less can get no where near the GTR I'd be pretty confident

Is it just me or do these new Audi's fail to excite anymore?
Correct.

Audi are now the Marks & Spencer of car manufacturers - huge range, very competent, easy to live with, but somehow rather contrived, bland and predictable.
Ditto BMW, Merc...

It's good business; if the car is outrageous/different/difficult, the market shrinks. Not many people want something different.
Agree.

Maybe Audi's new bi-line should be Drive an Audi and be un-exciting - but safewink
At least it would be realistic hehe unlike "The Ultimate Driving Machine"...

I really want to like it but it just leaves me cold. Lumpen styling, boring interior, boorish engineering. I just don't associate Audis with GT coupes any more. I just doesn't excite me.

If they replaced the S3 with a bespoke-platform Impreza rival, quattro-only (adaptable for various conditions including RWD-only settings), with a turbocharged engine of between 2 and 2.5 litres in an aluminium spaceframe, then I'd be pleased. This is as predictable as the next sunrise.

I didn't explain my point too well.

In my opinion, on the public road there is a finite point as to how fast you can really go before hazard perception and risk assessment is obscured.

On the track is a different matter of course.

You might want that car, I might want that car but the vast majority of drivers out there do not want that car. Unfortunately we're not a significant group of potential buyers.

Audi, BMW, Merc all make predictable, safe, mainstream cars to appeal to the masses. They might make claims about their prowess as sporting cars and they do well at that, but always with the caveat of "for its sector" or "for its size". Leave it to the niche manufacturers to provide the exciting cars.

That's a pretty looking car but put yourself with £58k in the bank wanting a new car. When you spend that amount of money unless you're going for stealth then you are going to want something that can't be found in the car super centre for 15k in a 1.8TFSi format. You won't get that with the GTR, you risk that with the M3, and maybe the merc. But then you're into Jag or baby Aston's if you go second hand.

With the torque being so low this will need to be driven and though fun that is I am sure with that weight you're occasionally going to get a bit fed up with that.

I can't really see this selling many at all, of course I guess that's what audi want to some extent but with the RS6 out there which is just a savage beast compared to this I am not creaming my pants over this launch. You could of course get a Caterham and a very nice second hand diesel chugger and then nothing would catch you. Or sniff around for a Baby Lambo as that's an audi with italian brushwork.
link please smile

never seen them that cheap

My problem is that those niche manufacturers always get a bashing on this site for not making dull, predictable, compromised machines for the masses. The world doesn't need yet another Audi - we've already got several - I hope the new owners of Saab and the new management at Alfa Romeo appreciate this.

Whilst i like the A5 in general, there's also something a bit lardy about it from some angles. Maybe it's the rear quarters that look wider than they need to be. Wouldn't say no if it was a free gift but still prefer the 3 series coupe overall.

Low torque, but lots of revs and gear reduction.

It's gonna feel plenty for any kind of normal day to day use imo, so why bother with even more mid-range power that just makes the top-end sparkle less when you use it?

Saw one yesterday evening parked in Bergamo (Milan) old town. We noted that the steering wheel is unusually small in diameter - very racy!

So thats 200kg heavier than an M3 and nearly half a ton heavier than an E46 CSL! Jeez thats heavy.
Which M3, the old one that was replaced over 3 years ago?

An E92 M3 with DCT weights 1675kg

This RS5 with S-Tronic weights 1725kg

So that is a 50kg difference. If it did not have the torsen quattro it would be lighter than the M3.
