RE: Porsche Reveals Hybrid 918 Spyder
Discussion
And the award for the most made-up numbers in one car goes to...Porsche!
If they can achieve that economy AND performance from a high-revving n/asp hybrid, then (a) I'll be stunned; and (b) I'll be robbing the nearest bank!!!
Thankfully Porsche (as evidenced by the Carerra GT and generations of GT3s) does care, as do I. I'll take mine gloriously n/asp with just the 500bhp thanks!

Just needs a couple of turbos strapped to that V8 now
No it most emphatically DOES NOT! Turbo's are for the lazy and those who don't care about how an engine behaves. Thankfully Porsche (as evidenced by the Carerra GT and generations of GT3s) does care, as do I. I'll take mine gloriously n/asp with just the 500bhp thanks!

I agree with you - I was initially sceptic, however, it is very unPorsche like just to bandy figures about, especialy in the hybrid market as there are many who will automatically want to knowck it down.If they can achieve that economy AND performance from a high-revving n/asp hybrid, then (a) I'll be stunned; and (b) I'll be robbing the nearest bank!!!

That said - I have a feeling that while the car may be able to do as it claims, I doubt it will do it all at the same time.
Anyway - I think the most positive thing is still the styling - if some of it filters down to the other cars, especially the Boxster & Cayman, then it will be fantatsic for the marque.

Yes it looks fantastic, but its all too good to be true. 0-60 in 3.2 and 78mpg. I dont think so.
One would imagine it can do 0-60 in 3.2 or 78mpg. Not both at the same time. But it doesnt work like that, I should think the battery in this car costs around the same as a moderatly expensive hot hatch and it'll probably be able to drive the car around 30-50 miles at low speeds, and once its empty its empty.. you've got to plug it in to recharge. The V8 is gonna be doing low 10's MPG when on song so as far as Co2 output goes its not exactly environmentally friendly. What i'm saying is until we have some sort of energy storage device thats up there with petrol wrt energy density these electric cars are never going to make an appreciable difference.

If it's a plug in hybrid that means it will have a limited range in hybrid mode.
Better then to throw out the additional weight of the batteries, electric motors and other paraphanalia and the performance would improve dramatically.
Dear oh dear, there are still some that will fight this corner... it amazes me.Better then to throw out the additional weight of the batteries, electric motors and other paraphanalia and the performance would improve dramatically.
I suppose the earth is flat and evolution never happened, right?
