I'd just like to second the earlier comments about not buying a used 4x4 now. Wait until March when
1. The trade-ins from those few people who can afford a new car are sitting on the forecourt
2. The snow has definitely subsided and 4x4's no longer command a premium

Use the time between now and then to work out what you actually want. It also gives you 2-3 months to test drive whatever either of you fancy without either of you panicking that you're going to buy it there and then. Go out in cars you don't expect to like, she needs to do the same. Make notes. Make sure you take the children with you, because if they don't fit/ throw up within 2 miles/ complain that they're not comfortable then you're on to a loser anyway.

To be honest I'd say it would be sensible to replace the 3 series with something big and family orientated like an XC90 because it isn't going to be long before they out grow your D3 and a Defender is not a sensible family car by any meaasure. I'm afraid you're going to have to bite the bullet on this one and get something dull and sensible, unless you by something a bit silly like an Audi S6 Avant, Volvo V70 R AWD or a Subaru Legacy Spec.B.

What about a nice Audi A6 3.0 V6 TDi Quattro? Loads of room and good in the snow... That where my money would be!

Suzuki Grand Vitara. Decent enough size for 3 kids, fair size boot and not as iposing as a Disco or X5.

For £12k gets a 57 - 58 with under 10k miles. Full time 4wd with diff lock and low.
Watch the tax though - the 2.0 gets hit for £425 on 57 I think...

My missus has an 07 2.0ltr, we had a holiday a few weeks ago and did 2000 trouble free miles.

I wasnt really that keen on it at first, she only thought of one as her mum has an auto GV.
We paid 9k (07 plate) for it nearly a year ago with 28k on the clock.

The situation is as follows, wifey has decided that she needs a new car to replace her 3 series touring. We have 3 kids all under the age of 10 and there simply isn't enough width on the rear seat to fit them all in comfortably.

She does about 2,000 miles a year eek and we live off an un-made road which means that when the snow comes for those 5 days a year, she can't get her car out. The rest of the year, she trundles into Tesco's once a week and drives to Derby (30 miles round trip) once a week too. The rest of the time she just uses my car mad

The budget we have set is £10k - £13k (max) and we both prefer lower mileage cars as I like them to be pampered and to be kept in mint condition.

I quite fancy the idea of a 4x4 as we are a bit 'outdoory' types and love mountain biking / walking etc in out of the way places, but wifey seems to be shying away from a 'proper' off roader like a 110 Defender etc (to be honest, I can understand this) and seems set on a Volvo XC90 (which I think are pig ugly)confused

So, over to the Pistonhead massive for some sound advice if you please!

Thanks beer

Buy an old Rangey / Grand Cherokee / Disco 2 / etc. for £1500, stick a private plate on it and tell her it cost £13,000. Next tell her you "won" your nice new sports car in a "competition".

Or buy the wrong one and spend the remaining £11,500 making it work

Jeep Patriot 2.0td, VW engine and box. We've had one for over two years and it hasn't missed a beat. We were the only car to get up our road in the recent snow passing 22" rolleyes equipped Range Rovers and X5s. 40+mpg too.

Pretty simple: seven seater 4x4. Q7, XC90, Disco3, X5. Maybe a Japanese equivalent. Trick is to find a low mileage one for that money.

We looked at seven seaters a while back. Had a friend down from Yorkshire in her XC90. "Do you get a lot of use out of the third row of seats?" I asked. "All the time. Because the other mums know I can carry six passengers, I'm always doing the taxis runs for them.". Worth bearing in mind.

Good call Greg - only problem is getting one of these (a good one) within budget. We are hoping to look at a Disco 2 today (TD5) and an XC90 too...

i`d still be tempted by a Sorento in `xt` trim for that money. Would have to be a manual though as the auto`s are an extra £200 road tax.

You pompous ahole! If you extracted that fat head from your arse maybe we could all see the sun.

Pointing out that the OP's buying criteria aren't all that sensible is constructive advice.

7 seats, so XC90 or Discovery would be my shortlist, or get one of those MultiMac child seat things for a normal estate car.
