Not all us old fogies are blind to the cars we drive. I have always had sports cars and big American cars and now drive a Murcielago, Ferrari Boxer and an F150 Lightning as an everyday car, and enjoy every mile. You can't judge a driver by their wrinkles.

You really cant!!! Going to Uni on the back roads (which I've driven on a very very regular basis since I passed my test (3.5 years) and would quite happily say I know the road well) only to be out driven by a Pug 106GTI. Every Thursday last semester, without fail, the same cherry GTI would be there on that stretch of road at the same time as me, if I'm ahead I feel pressured and costraphobic, when I'm behind I try my damnest to keep up, and fail.

This my friends, is a Pug 106GTI driven by a lady who looks in her late 50's early 60's. I have respect for her. I know that my car would be outrun easily on the straights, and probably outrun on the bendies by that car aswell, but I'm quite confident in many corners, but there's not a single bend on that road which she hasn't matched my entry/exit speeds.

That is why I no longer take that route to Uni on thursdays, as I'm afraid to be embarrassed yet again. (4 weeks of thursday humiliation was enough)

But yeah, apart for that I've seen a neighbour refusing to use her Toyota Celica AWD in the snow last year as she's not confident that her little car can handle the snow. (I assumed it was because she thought it was only 2wd)

My mother has owned a Clio 182 Trophy from new and has now done nearly 70k. She drives it like she stole it, much to the annoyance of my father :-)

Yup, havent got any other car.
I know that its natural for the pug to be ahead of me, but I just didnt expect it on that road and with a driver of that age. I started driving that road when I passed my test, about 4-5 days a week, to and from uni. I used to be a bit of a tool in the car, my first car in particular, the 1.1 Saxo, which I didnt like losing speed or momentum in, therefore refused to slow down for corners as it took me so long to build the speed back up.

If it was anywhere else, apart for maybe 1 other back road, I wouldnt be surprised or anything, but its because I know (or at least thought I knew) the roads so well which makes it a shocker for me.

Yeah the difference between the cars on that kind of road isn't massive TBH. Just think, for your 4-5 years of keen driving she could have 30-40 smile I wish the old dears around here would hurry up a bit.

biggrin

Had a similar experience in France.

Back roads etc, was in my clio, didn't know the roads so wasn't especially pressing on, but was making decent safe progress.

Cue a knackered old 205 gti driven by a decidedly stereotypical old french woman absolutely screaming past, she even seemed to hit the limiter briefly as she wooshed past, I was rather impressed.

About 15/16 years ago when general (ie non club) track days first took off at Knockhill, there was a white haird guy who looked 65 - 70+ & he drove a white 306 diesel that was lowered etc. He looked at least double the age of most there, Peddled it really well though smile

MX-5's are supposed to be one of the best handling cars money can buy yet everytime I see them they're being driven by 50 odd year old women on nice roads at 35mph rolleyes
I see you've met my mother then rofl

It is my dad's MX5 and he drives with the roof down pretty much every journey. He gets some weird looks driving around roof down in the summer at 2am!
