Is it wrong for a 23 year old to WANT that car so badly?
No, I was 21 when I got my first. I'm now 29 and still buy the bloody things almost compulsively.pSyCoSiS said:
YES - DO IT !
The Supercharged Straight-Six is a wonderful engine, and very strong if maintained correctly.
Would be rapid with that engine in there!
The old XK engine only kicks out 160bHp on a good day. The AJ16S is 326bHp against the V12's 285bHp and a good deal lighter. If the bodywork on it is still in good enough condition I think I might go for it. The Supercharged Straight-Six is a wonderful engine, and very strong if maintained correctly.

I like it, all this talk of mpg is defeatism. I'd rather do 5 miles in this than 50 in a 3 series diesel.
Personally, I need to eat, and you can't buy food with driving pleasure ![wink](/inc/images/wink.gif)
Still, lovely car. Stylewise, older XJs are a noticeably better-looking (though I'm not so sure about the drag coefficient...) than the ones that replaced them.

They are said to be a lot more durable than the later V8 supercharged engines.I have seen some X300 XJRs going for less than £2k in good nick, with FSH - they represent staggering value.
But yes - a supercharged Series III / XJS would be very daring and different - imagine the looks on people's faces when you tear them at the lights!

All Series Jags are very pretty cars and the Series 3 (particularly late ones) are beautiful inside too. I love all of them, but my favourite is definately the Series 2.

It does seem cheap if it is a decent car but bargains are out there and this could be one of them. Jags are expensive things to put right though, so if you want a very good one it is generally cheaper to buy a good car in the first place than it is to restore one. Still, it would be a lovely car to roll round in for a while.
I believe interest in all older Jaguars will rise now since the cars they make new now appeal to a wider audience and this adds to the prestige of older cars, particularly to these 'definitive' Series Jags. I believe they will follow the Mk2 and become expensive in time.
I've owned two XJs (quite new ones at the time) back in the 70s when I'd be twenty something. A Series 1 and a Series 2.![](http://i590.photobucket.com/albums/ss344/d-j-b/XXJ12L.jpg)

Still prefer the earliest incarnation.
I used them for work, covering about 700 miles a week.
Here's my S2 back in the day when they had some class...oh, and handled beautifully when still on fresh suspension. Brakes were excellent too(for the doubters).

My boss had (from new) a S1 XJ12, and be in no doubt about it, that was a fast car.
The earlier poster comparing the performance to a Golf GTi is nonsense.
I'm talking about cars in first class condition here of course, not something ready for the scrapper.

make sure to roll up to the supermarket food waste skip in the jag and introduce yourself to your new lefty tree hugging mates as a committed 'resource saving car recycler' ensuring that the maximum lifespan is extracted from manufactured goods. Who knows they might even chip in enough of their dole money for a lift for you to drive it back home.

I had an XJS when I was that age, didn't regret it. I bought it to drive to LeMans in (which was great) and liked it so much I just kept it until it went rusty. Sort of kind of looking at another (although XK prices are quite tempting)louismchuge said:

Who cares about the price of petrol. That is merely the cost of enjoyment! You can't put a price on your personal pleasure! Edit: Found him, bought when he was 12!
