Mid to late '70's I ran a petrol station and I think (could be wrong, old age does bugger up the memory!) that people would come in and ask for a £1 worth - they got c4 gallons.

Again, my memory could be wrong - but I seem to recall that part of the reason fuel changed from gallons to litres pricing was due to the, at the time, mechanical pumps not being able to cope with the fill rate.

We also had Redex (1p a shot), two stroke oil in a can, checked your oil for you and put the fuel in whilst you sat nice and dry in your car!
Yes, I am on old git!

I paid 63.9p a litre for 4 star when I got my first car in late 1998.

Just about half what I paid for unleaded this week.

First paid for petrol as a learner in late 2000 for 83.7p/L. Least I've paid (in UK) was 67.9p/L at the old Esso garage at the Metrocentre in Gateshead late 2001.

I remember back in SA that when you filled up it was out of the change in your pocket, petrol was never an issue other than being able to make the distances between the distant service stations ( a few of which were hand pumps). Zimbabwe had handpump stations as recently as 1995.

£1.28 per gallon. 50 pence worth would last me all week on my Honda SS50.
50p of petrol lasted a week?

For arguments sake say you got 100mpg, are you saying you only did just over 50 miles per week?
School was only three miles away.

59.9 per litre for unleaded in september 1997.

I remember it very clearly as I parked so close to the pump that I could only just get the nozzle in.

It took 10 years to go to 99.9 but it's gone mental now.

I seem to remember 46.9pence per litre at a Fina station in Kirkstall Road, leeds. That was in about 1996. Seems a little cheap to what other report, but thats my memory!

Also i used to fill up £5 per week. My VW Golf at the time also had stop start technology as it always cut out at junctions. Never got to the bottom of that problem.....

Oh right.

How did you manage to get sticky fingers from the local girls if you didn't go far due to being tight.

Unlike the girls.

Depressingly I've never paid less than £1/litre.

Passed in December 2007 and it was already 101.something if I remember correctly.

I think I was filling up just before it reached over £1, but that was when I was learning in my own car and I passed a couple of months before you... I was waiting for someone to post up around the same time I was filling up cos I honestly forgot.

The cheapest I've ever bought petrol was in early 1973 when a new petrol station opened and had a promotion at 25p per gallon. The usual price was 33p per gallon.
Ditto, there was a Supercortemaggiore petrol station round the corner from me, not only did it sell cheap petrol but it had a great name and the badge on the pumps was a six-legged dragon eek Wonderfull stuff plus I could get 3 x gallons for a quid! biggrin

I remember filling up my 55 litre Peugeot 205 for around £24 so was paying what 34 p per litre. As a kid (1978) I remember my Dad getting me Smurfs at National (BP) or a Matchbox car when he paid more than £18 filling up his Daimler Double Six each week. I had thousands of Smurfs!!

Not sure what it was in 1997 but today paid £1.36.9 a litre today. That stung a bit.

Half-a-crown a gallon! (1962)
(NB Your dad/grandad can explain the coinage and Imperial measurements.)

My NSU Quickly only took 7 pints (ask him again!!) to brim it from dry; my dad's MG Magnette took 8 gallons from about 1/4 full to "looking like it was damn' near full"...so that's what I gave it (2 quids' worth) when I was allowed to take it out.

Mind you, there was the extra cost of the Redex (upper cylinder lubricant): 1d (go on - ask him again!!!) for a "shot"; 1s for a "long shot".

Oh, happy days!

Best to all, B (Old Fart)

..& I've just remembered 5*; in the early 70s I was lucky enough to run a couple of exotics that needed the high octane stuff that to-day is also only a memory.
