Yes, but ask yourself this - when was the last time you had an accident and when was the last time you got pulled and they lifted the bonnet?
Running someone over and killing them is worse than bent metal.
The implications of that with no ins are huge..

Yes and when was the last time that happened to you? The Dicks realise exactly what they’re doing, it’s a game of chance and usually they get away with it.

It’s not generally a great outcome for either party if you run someone over and kill them.

Causing life-changing injuries can be far more expensive than killing someone, especially someone with no dependants. Such claims can easily run into the millions.

These days with ANPR you have a much greater chance of being stopped by the police, they are not stupid if it comes up as a 1.3 pop they are going to want to know why it looks like and sounds like an Abarth.

I've certainly seen that on Police programs. Someone driving like an arse gets pulled, and the cops check the modifications with the insurance company.

And why the VIN on the dashboard doesn't match the one stamped on the frame under the carpet......

Plus, they do it to avoid getting pulled in the first place. No "no insurance" ping on the ANPR means they usually get away with it.
Looking at my local police Twitter, they only get caught when driving like a knob or something doesn't look right... 18 year old in a diesel Jag looks wrong, they check and find it's insured to a 47 year old doctor hundreds of miles away.
It's often the hard of thinking who do this sort of thing so they don't think it through properly... but if an 18 year old fitted just the engine from an ST to his 1.0 (no bodykit, bang map etc) and insured it under his name and address as a 1.0, he'd only get found out if he drove like a knob.

Starting? If a 90's Ford looks like that where you can see it, its 90% certain that the car is basically fked, unless you really like playing with the sparkly stick.

Exactly. It’s rife on BMW pages on Facebook, You find me a traffic cop that can tell the difference between an M50b20 and an M52b28...

An IN10 FPN is six points and £300 NIP and court date six points and unlimited fine. When insurance for a Fiesta ST for a new driver is ten times or more the FPN that's where the incentive lies.

Insurance fraud is one thing but if the DVLA haven't been updated for other reasons like the donor vehicle is stolen it's a can of worms that if opened could give you a criminal record for life. copjudge

A mate spotted this one earlier - Fiesta Zetec S Black 1.0 converted to run the 1.6 ST engine.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/114794433198

They asked for a bit more info but the trader seemed more keen on upselling the fact it was undeclared / still registered as a 1.0 because "tax is only £20" and also referencing the fact that insurance would be far less if you don't tell them about the engine conversion rolleyes

Surely it wouldn't be that much hassle for the DVLA and insurance co's to have an employee spend an hour a day on eBay, running the reg plates of these cars and reacting accordingly.

If the advert says it has the different engine, and there are pictures of the car with the engine in, how much more proof would they need!

Insurance co's cancel the policy. Easy money.

DVLA adjust the tax band. Easy money.

In fairness to the seller it’s well described in coherent English with no use of errant capital letters. Hell, even the punctuation is good!

Event tyres, still has drum brakes at the rear.

What could go wrong?
