Harry, £4,000 on changing every single thing under the car ...
I think that's fantastic. Leaving aside the implicit arrogance in anyone questioning how you spend your own money, the reality is that you've spent (comparatively) little in restoring a (comparatively) expensive car (in its hey-day), to a level that will see it last another motoring generation. It'll be as fresh, sorted and as safe as virtually every other car on the road today.
If you're remotely tree-huggy, it's also a really environmentally sound way of motoring, as the real environmental cost of cars is in their manufacture rather than use or disposal, so to keep them running is good for the planet, as well as the barge-ist's mental well-being.
Good on ya, 0a!

Thuggery and elegance in equal measure. I'm impressed and intimdated at the same time. I'd shake your hand, but would be worried you'd headbutt me.
Magnificent purchase.

What a stunning combination. Handsome cars the e39, not matched by BMW since to my eyes.
Thanks guys. Definitely a stunning combination. Feels so well screwed together. Cruises effortlessly at 80-100 mph. Like the understated / classy looks. Oh yes and for me.....first car with heated seats......it's the small things haha Ps: It is barge paradise at gms....e38 7 series porn everywhere

How does this rate? Looks clean, straight and in a nice part of the North. Is it too expensive? I know the 1.8 is meant to be super slow but with those looks, I don't think outright pace is important. I'm also heartened to see what looks like a clarinet in the boot, though I may be mistaken

If you just want a run about, then that will probably go forever! How does this rate? Looks clean, straight and in a nice part of the North. Is it too expensive? I'd take a look at this low mile w124 280 as well http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C555758#

When I sell a customer an expensive item of clothing, I explain to them that it's an investment in themselves, not just the item. It makes them feel good and will last them a considerable time if looked after, long after the impact of the price has gone. eg. my grandad has a pair of handmade Grenson shoes that he still has after 30 years, and a coat for the same amount of time.
I think the same applies here with the Benz refurbishment.
My philosophy too. I have always a list of thing-to-do on my C36 and 300-24SL. I think the same applies here with the Benz refurbishment.
Much is non essential, but it's for my own personal satisfaction.
As you've alluded to, the quality is remembered long after the price has been forgotten.
That's why I drive a classic Mercedes I suppose......
We've just returned from another Scottish touring holiday in the 124. It really is the best car of all time, for me, at least. It feels so permanent and it functions so well. It is just shy of 300,000miles. I don't care that it has no value to anyone else: to me it is irreplaceable. I've done 20,000miles since the completion of my refurbishment this April and it has cost me nothing but oil and filters and tyres in that time. Every mile that passes under its wheels makes that insane refurbishment cheaper and cheaper and cheaper.

I think I've been to that dealer before looking at a Mk1 MX5.
I don't think the red helps the contours and makes it look a bit ungainly. That said, I love colours that go against the grain.

Not a fan of the spoiler or hubcaps (although I had similar wheel-trims on my 190E and they looked OK on the smaller car) Don't mind red but I would prefer contrasting lower cladding (my 190E was signal red with darker tartan red bumpers and cladding)I'd take a look at this low mile w124 280 as well http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C555758#

Not sure about this one. A bit over priced? Body looks to be in good condition but the silver is too silvery. Then again, I'm viewing on my phone and I'm half cut.
