A favourite of mine (that I may have posted before):-

'Why buy a fast car? You won't get there any sooner'

People who say that kind of thing instantly get filed into a little box in my head with 'idiot' written on one side and 'tt' on the other.

Even ignoring the obvious inaccuracy of the statement, why choose to st on someone's parade and insult them? I would never look at a new car on which someone had spent a lot of money and say 'Why buy a dull Ecobox smoker pile of crap? You'll hate your life even more'
This genuinely made me chuckle biggrin

People do try and pee on your chips when you buy a car that isn't the same as the dull box their OH beat them into driving.

A friend of mine has recently bought a brand new 1.2 Corsa on finance over 5 years. I was telling him about my desire to buy a 996 turbo to which he asked, "why would you want that when it'll just depreciate?"

I tried explaining depreciation curve to him.

If the rather ridiculous statement, that we must not build more roads, because they will only fill up with more vehicles is true, then equally we must not build more prisons because they will only fill up with more criminals.
You just don't get it.
Your logic is utterly flawed.
Do yourself a favour and read the link I posted.

Building more roads, induces demand for road travel. That is a simple and obvious fact.
There is nothing in that statement which says anything about prisons, schools or hospitals.

Do you honestly believe that if you added four lanes to the M25 no more people might take their car rather than the train because all the congestion has gone??
Pan Pan said:
Do you seriously believe we build more roads, just for the sake of building more roads???
I never said or implied that. You are attempting to build a strawman and failing.

More roads will ease congestion but not at a 1:1 ratio because as you improve travel times, more people choose to drive over other travel options or not making the journey at all.
I am not saying that 100% of that extra road space will be eaten by this extra demand hence all road building is pointless. I am simply saying that UNLIKE schools and prisons (with FIXED demand - short/medium term) you have to take into account the flexibility of travel demand when easing congestion with a new bit of road space.
It's not rocket science!

"Even If you could gear a petrol to deliver the same torque as a diesel it wont go any where in a hurry would be totally pointless"

Taken from another forum on the subject of converting from a petrol engine to a diesel.

My favourite are the anti car. anti road twunts who say we should not build more roads, because if we do they will only be filled up with more cars.
This being the case, Then we must not build any more hospitals, because if we do, they will only fill up with more sick people, using this line of reasoning, it means if we build more hospitals we will be creating more and more sick people.
We must not build more houses, because if we do, they will only fill up with more people, therefore if we build more houses we will cause a population explosion.
We must not build more schools, because if we do, they will only fill up with more children, again leading to a population explosion.
We must not build more shops or businesses, because if we do they will only fill up with more people who want to make, buy and sell things.
Dont these anti car, anti road donkeys realise the utter stupidity of their statement, or is it they have a highly selective the buck stops here' approach, which can stop on anything `they' are not interested, in or do not like?

I don't have to be a detective, I remember arguing with him every bloody time it comes up! biggrin

Although, saying that, there are many other threads where he's posted it, since at least 2010.

a BMW 318 is a 1.8l, 320 a 2.0l, 335 3.5l, etc etc..
I would hardly call that stupid, in fact it would be quite a logical way of thinking surely?
It used to be that way though.
Nope, I had the first model of 3 series the E30, it was a 316 which used a 1,766cc engine. Basically the 318i engine without the injection but they didn't call it a 318
Ehh.. the first 3 series was the E21, which was replaced by the E30. Although the E21 also played the same 316, 318, 318i naming game with it's 1.8l engine.

Sounds like someone trying to justify their smoker purchase. The old "it has eleventy million lb.ft of torque so it must be fast!" Usually on something with a 0-60 of close to 10s.

Wow! That's a pretty impressive one. You wonder why, in her world, she had never seen a car steering with (a) its rear wheels or (b) all of its wheels.

It is actually slightly scary that people who know so little about how cars work are allowed to drive one at 70mph.
Remind me of the video where a lady puts snow chains on the front wheels of a BMW 1 Series, I'm sure its on youtube, but I can't be asked to look now.

Its pretty scary.

He presumably thinks that any more performance would be too much for public roads. You have to admire his commitment to safety and keeping that beast tamed.

My dad sold a new Focus for 'dying on him' during an overtake. I assumed that he meant it had failed to deliver more power at high revs (being a small turbo engine). After asking a few questions like 'What gear were you in?' and 'How fast were you going?', I worked out that he had hit the limiter. You wouldn't notice it coming with that tiny engine but it literally hasn't occurred to him that it might top out in 3rd.

He's ended up buying a 4.2 l auto Jag and a 335i (also auto) to avoid any overtaking problems in future!
Overkill, maybe, to a problem that can be solved by changing gear, but quite a PH response to an underpowered car.

Top of third in a Focus Ecoboost (at least the 125 version) is quite illegal, too. Good man.

Speaking to a car salesman earlier today:

The salesman -"Oh no no no, they dont make the M3 anymore. I was speaking to a BMW salesman the other day and he said they dont make them"

Me - "nope, they do."

Him - "A BMW salesman man said so, and if anybody knows, its him."

Me - *walks away*
