I won't disagree that filtering at speed is a risk, but equally given the attitude of some drivers toward bike and cycle filtering, coming in at speed might discourage someone from attempting to block said filtering vehicle.
You might not think it's very common, but i'm commuting by bicycle at the moment due to a long winded insurance and DVLA fk up, part of my 3 mile commute takes me down a road with some pretty horrendous traffic congestion (due to road works) and in the space of around half a mile I will get at least 2 drivers who very deliberately swerve out to try to stop me passing them. The faster I go the less of a good idea they seem to think it is.
Why not wait in turn? You might not think it's very common, but i'm commuting by bicycle at the moment due to a long winded insurance and DVLA fk up, part of my 3 mile commute takes me down a road with some pretty horrendous traffic congestion (due to road works) and in the space of around half a mile I will get at least 2 drivers who very deliberately swerve out to try to stop me passing them. Wait in turn, on a bike (or bicycle)?
Are you aware that
a) sitting in a traffic line on a motorbike or bicycle is stupid.
b) you actually fail your motorbike test for not making progress and sitting in a line of traffic. You are absolutely supossed to filter through traffic. It's not just "legal" , it is part of being a competent motorbike rider.

Not true any more - it's rider's choice whether to do it or not.PF62 said:
I don't share the hilarity. Yes the rider was reckless and stupid but both they and the pillion could have been quite seriously injured.snake_oil said:

The same people who don't like cyclists filtering probably get riled when we take the primary position in the lane Wait in turn, on a bike (or bicycle)?

Which is many cases is a synonym for "in the way" A key tenet of the Primary position is travelling at a reasonable speed with the traffic flow, something that some riders don't do.

Not true any more - it's rider's choice whether to do it or not.I see people on motorbikes sitting in long traffic queues here in Somerset on nice open A roads with barely any opposing traffic (rush hour, one directional for the most part) and just watch in disbelief as they don't even pull out an overtake.
A friend told me her son doesn't filter or overtake as cars keep purposefully pulling out on him. We get people block lane 2 ahead of traffic merges here all the time The joy of country living I guess :-p

I did my test in central London, so I gues a bit different! - you could travel only one mile in one hour if you didn't. My examiner was in a car and I was told NOT to wait for him. I only saw him for less than half my test.
Ah, central London is possibly an exception then. I asked the tester specifically before we set off and he said it was optional. Not much traffic up here though, so it wasn't worth doing to give myself something else to make an arse of.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
