I fear Derin will be out shopping for a new (solid topped) coffee table this weekend.
He's never going to be able to relax in that room again. hehe

That's a lovely story. It cheered me up. I didn't notice the link at first so hadn't read it when I said I liked the Mustang.

Don't make the mistake I have made and become frightened to drive the car in case someone runs into the back of it or something. I own my late father's Jag. It is precious to me and I find I am reluctant to drive it sometimes and do a very small mileage in it now. I can't bear to get it wet either so don't drive it in the rain - it's all very silly!

I have admired the Sierra before. It must be vanishingly rare now. I don't remember the base model ever being a common sight even when they were new.

Thanks tobinen, particularly for the valuation, my gut feel was that the price was too high (£2.5k) at that mileage. That thread makes for some good reading, think I'll put my wallet back in my pocket - although it might come out again if he sends it to WBAC for £600...
Way too much. I paid £1,500 for my 2001 Touring and I felt that was on the high side.

All this glass coffee table malarky has reminded me of a story an old builder chap once told me; back in the late 80's a pal of his convinced him to go to a house party at some 'executive' home in suburbia of some non-descript town, one Saturday night.

On arrival he sensed that things weren't necessarily quite right, but he got himself a drink and had a wander round.

In one of the back rooms he found, despite still being quite early in the evening, a couple involved in some heavy-petting. In a further back room he found a (using the term loosely) 'lady' squatting over her gentleman friend, pooing onto the windscreen of a mini that the chap held above him.

My storey telling friend didn't mention whether he hung around or not.

Hello, long time lurker, infrequent poster due to my lack of acceptable barge.

A good friend is selling a 2000 e39 528i with 133k on the clock, owned by him and his father for a long time . He hasn't had a sniff yet after a month or so. The ad looks fine, but looking at the MOT History I noticed it states that the brake pipes are corroded, which would put me off.

Am I right in thinking this is a big job on these (fuel tank drop etc)? Anyone have an experience in getting this done and approximate costs? It's both front and rears that are down as advisories.

Can't decide whether to advise him to drop the price/get it done or just keep waiting. It's also got a misty/condensation filled front headlight, is there an easy fix for this, or should it be replaced to lighten up the front-end?

Bit of a double edged post this, as if the price goes low enough I'd probably take it off him as I love the ride, balloon style tyres and the straight 6 engine.

Thanks for your help!
Corroded brake pipes is a standard MoT advisory IME. I've had most of my cars over the years with it. Misted headlamps and broken adjusters are standard E39 issues (have a look here: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=... )

Sounds as though your one is around £1,000 - 1,500 at a guess (less is better(. Decent cars overall

As Tobinen said, the corrosion on "brake-pipes" is almost a ubiquitous advisories on these cars now and it really depends to what degree they are corroded. The could go on for years like this.

I do have some experience of brake lines actually bursting (obviously at the most inopportune moment) on an E39. It was on the year 2000 Touring that we now keep in France but it happened 4 years ago in the U.K.
As I recall it was a back-axle off job to replace them and I think the bill (it may have involved other works) came to £600 IIRC.

The misting headlamps and broken adjusters is a very cheap but I found extremely time consuming and fiddly job to do. You can do it yourself with only very basic tools and the adjusters themselves can be bought on Ebay for pennies. So, if you have the time and patience it is do-able.

How much is he asking for the car?

A leggy pre-facelift E39 with a normal engine has to be something very special to top £2k, IMO.

I paid a grand for a nice enough car that sounds a lot like that one in 2008!

Yes, £2.5k for that sounds like too much. If it's decent no more than £1500 at the moment I reckon.

I sold my wife's very high spec car, a 528i Touring(Xenons, Comfort seats etc.) with FSH and less miles for £1500 about 3 years ago so it would have been an equivalent age then.

Thanks for the replies, knew this was the place to get some honest advice for him. If he does WBAC it, I'll try and save it as I like the spec and the interior is mint.

I'm sure someone in here would take it for a nominal sum over the WBAC offer... Better in a bargeist's hands than some vulgar drifter.

I bought a 2002 530i with 90k miles a few years back for just over £1k, with a full MOT. At the next MOT I got the "corroded brake pipes" message and had them sorted - about £250 for the rears, as I recall. Lovely car, but a bit too thirsty for the 20k/year mileage my (now ex) wife was putting on it. I gave it away to a PHer rather than sell it to someone who'd drop it to the floor an fit phat rimz innit bro.

Unless it's in extraordinary condition, your friend's car can only really be worth £1000-1500 with the headlight fixed.

Setting aside that a 528 is not an optimal variant, as you must have it for the MOT history have you put the reg into WBAC? I would guess on their offering £150-270 before they've taken 75+ off on viewing.

++Ask me how I know with what they thought of my 530 Touring++ [since scrapped post rear airbags popping and rust coming from nowhere to everywhere in 15 months flat]

Croutons,

Could you please tell my Mum and sister the same...as they won't take it from me and seem to be popping the same hallucinogenic pills as Nitjay's friend in relation to my Mum's 520i Touring.
