Sweet! An S65 would be completely mental in an E30, especially a vert! I'd want all kinds of cross-bracing personally, as well as suitably chocolate-coloured chinos
Still have a yearning for an S38 or S50 powered Touring, or even a V8. Here is one of my favourite "totally over the top" sleeper conversions:

That it is Waiter: "M70 in sir's coke-can BMW with no airbags?"
DM: "Why yes thank you, I think I shall! No need to wrap it."
ETA: Really liking the look of the new MX-5. Quite partial to the Mk1s too. Especially this one:

On the subject of non ///M E30's, they are starting to get expensive. A lovely early Mtech 1.

Loon turning tricks aside, I always think these are overlooked when people look at small sports cars of the MX-5 ilk.1400
Not sure how much more fun you can have for £1400.

The Mk3 MR2 is probably the best sports car bargain of all time. It's 7/10 experience of the Elise for 1/10 the price. Pretty rapid with a 1ZZFE conversion. Or better yet a V6 (1MZ or 2GR)
I'd have onein a shot if:

I'd have onein a shot if:
- it wasn't even less practical than an Elise
- it had more than 4 cylinders and 138bhp
- 986 weren't such good value

That's an absolute bargain. They can easily do many miles, so the mileage isn't a problem; and that one has the bonus of the TTE exhaust, which at least makes it sound a bit more interesting (I've driven one without, and have owned mine with for the last 2.5 years).1400

Also looks in pretty good condition, from the photos.
If anyone is ever after information on them, feel free to mail me. I'm by no means an expert, but will help where I can.

I wish I have the pictures to hand... My brother recently saw a very late E30 Cabriolet, which had been fitted with a S65 and a 6-spd box. The car was the subject to a nut and bolt, no expense spared restoration with genuine BMW parts, right down to brand new fasteners! Prussian Blue Metallic with black carpets and cream leather, 17" BBS LM with gold centers. Brakes upgraded to 4-pot brembos off a 928/944, Large LSD with 3.64 final ratio... Must have cost in excess of £20k to build, but it is such a sweet sleeper - no M-Tech kit that I am sure it was well worth it....

Had one for a couple of years prior to the Z4MC and loved it even though I'm not a convertible chap.
Put on some decent non-runflat boots, Eibach springs and bingo.

That straight 6. Bullet proof, unbelievably versatile.

Chris - I approve, you're talking to a bonafide donk-swap / E30 fetishist here
In reality anything more than 300bhp (maybe 400bbhp at a push - couple of S62s out there and they sound rude and move in startlingly brisk fashion, naturally!) is a bit of a waste in a regular E30 without serious upgrades to the suspension (among other parts!). The E30 M3 however is ripe for a bit of mischief provided you can keep the wight over the front manageable (and stomach the eye-watering amount of work to fit any engine other than hotted up M?20 / M30
Don't forget we have our own resident PHer with an extra-special E30 ("RNG TOY") (I'll let you guess what it's for ). Was an S54 with supercharger, now to be an S85 with DCT (!)
His DD was a twin rotrex'd E39 M5 with around 600bhp if I recall correctly!

The Z4 ragtop lurking in the background, in 3 litre guise, an absolute peach of a car at silly cheap prices at the moment.

They are aging well. Should think 3.0 manuals are relatively rare birds.Had one for a couple of years prior to the Z4MC and loved it even though I'm not a convertible chap.

TBH, I don't really understand what Bangle is on about. I think I'd rather hear an explanation for the rear ends of the 6 and 7 series!

Z4 lovely to look at and sounds so good. Sure they drive well on proper tyres / tweaked suspension. I just mildy prefer the 986 despite the bork factor it just seems a bit more special (or should that be "speshul", given chocolate nature of Porsche kettles ).
moose - I don't know about styling / aesthetic cycles but I agree that Bangle was ahead of his time. I actually think that most of his cars still look contemporary or even fresh (if challenging in some cases - still struggle to love the E65 among others) >10 years on.
He's either lucky or a bonafide genius. Likely somewhere in between, with a talented team of acolytes.
BMW has since bottled it / dropped the ball in my view and is only just beginning to have a not complete horrid line-up, if slightly "back to bland".
