£350 per month loan and no car
A loan I set up several months back to buy a used 350 Exige. Yes I did set the payment at that, just so it reminded me what a wonderful thing I was buying.
Frustratingly, despite looking since April and being ready to pull or fist whatever, I've still not found a decent car. All of 4 across both AT and PH under 50K
Hopefully get one soon and be able to post some shoestring running costs.
Heading into winter might present the odd good deal to be had. And you'll already have paid a nice chunk off. A loan I set up several months back to buy a used 350 Exige. Yes I did set the payment at that, just so it reminded me what a wonderful thing I was buying.

No depreciation to speak of and it's currently in the garage after spewing its transmission fluid everywhere, so my average may go up.
But £170 a month to keep an RS6 is not too shabby
Putting fuel in it dents the average somewhat
Averaging £270 a year on insurance and just over £1,000 on maintenance is damn good goingBut £170 a month to keep an RS6 is not too shabby

I'm trying not to think about it!
I bought my BMW Z4M Coupe last December and have had an Inspection 2 and replacement crank rod bearing shells so £2K+, and I haven't done 2,000 miles in it yet.
But at least it won't need any major service items for a while - I just need to get the OE wheels refurbed, new tyres fitted, suspension changed and a full alignment done!

I spend half the year working away, sometimes I pause the insurance until I'm home. Also clean licence, full NCB and living in a relative backwater has its advantages.I admit I've been lucky with maint, but I do some of my own stuff. It's when it comes to working with stuff I know is gonna be a pain that it goes in the garage.
2015 Fiesta ST
depreciation: £120 / month to date but likely to reduce as depreciation curve flattens off
insurance : £23 / month
Fuel: £60 / month
Tax: 15.50 / month
£220 / month or £2621 per year
Its not a huge figure but its more than I expected it to be and doesn't account for maintenance and consumables
Brake pads: £100 / year
Tyres: £160 / year
Oil + Filter: £40 / year
Another £25 / month so basically the guts of £250 / month for me.
To put that into perspective the Mortgage on my first flat was just over that a month. Scary how much cars cost when you break it all out.

Four years ago I bought a Mercedes C270 CDI for £1500. Since then all its had is glow plugs, a couple of TCA`s and a couple of services. ( I do my own)
It runs as sweet as a nut and does 50MPG, who wants to spend shed loads on a car?
£256 Insurance, £320 Road Tax, £40 MOT about £50- £70 a month fuel. So far this year nothing has needed doing mechanically.
By the way, I have a Merc` R129 stored in the garage that costs even less to run, and it appreciates in value. ( hopefully ? )

You’ve got a great one Mr Tiday, have seen from the Z4 Forum. I bought my BMW Z4M Coupe last December and have had an Inspection 2 and replacement crank rod bearing shells so £2K+, and I haven't done 2,000 miles in it yet.

At least you won’t lose anything in depreciation, which is the massive killer (which some people have neglected to include)

For 70 odd miles a week, Doesnt' really seem worth it.
Average 70 miles per week sounds about right over the course of the year for me, maybe even less than that at probably more like 60 per week. Although a lot of that average mileage will be made up from our yearly euro road trip through the alps which can easily come to a sudden 2000miles addition over the course of three weeks. (Very worth it )
The rest being typical shopping runs and a number of weekend drive outs on the countryside twisties.

Not me, that's for sure.Yes it's a few quid and looking at things sensibly it probably makes no sense but if keeping a car for the long term it doesn't really matter.
I am soon to spend approx £4k on an old BMW E36 328. And I can't wait..

Assuming that's a 135i coupe? How much has that been to run and how much do you think they're worth? Prices of them seem all over the place.
It’s the little brother - badged as 125i and 215 bhp stock - normally aspirated N52 - 6 speed manual (mapped now to 270 bhp and badged as 130i) - was looking for a 135i coupe but condition and prices were as you say all over the place and I always buy on condition rather than miles and this one was in really great order so I bought it - it’s been perfect so far and the N52 engine is a honeyAssuming that's a 135i coupe? Fair enough. We bought an old E46 as a track toy with friends before. It was a POS. It wasn't even worth spending money on cooling, kinematics refresh, engine etc etc...Yes it's a few quid and looking at things sensibly it probably makes no sense but if keeping a car for the long term it doesn't really matter.

I find the M2 incredibly cheap and a far more versatile tool with no hassle. I don't think we could have got the E46 to its level of capability/fun for less than the M2 is actually costing.

This is a fun road car and something I can enjoy at low speeds and low limits. I want maximum interaction and something I can park anywhere without worrying.
If total cost is approx £10k, that works for me...The £4k will be on a LSD, engine work and a short final drive.
For me, it's a load more fun (though way slower) than a new M2...
At one end of the scale I have a 10 year old E500 that costs £500 pa for VED and a similar amount for insurance. Depreciation maybe £1.5kpa? Fuel for 4,000 miles a year £1,000 pa. Servicing/tyres average £500 pa so around £4k pa.
At the other end a 5 year old Fiat 500; £20 Ved, £220 ins, depreciation £1kpa, fuel for 2,000 miles pa £300. Servicing/tyres £300 so average £1740 pa.
Both owner outright so no finance.
It still costs a surprising amount when you add it all up - nearly £6kpa with depreciation, £3.5k without.

We run three cars:
Wife's BMW 220 - paid for, so costs tax, insurance and occasional servicing. Easily <£750 / year
My E220D - bought for cash new in 2012. Costs tax, insurance and servicing. c£1,000 / year
My 987S - also bought for cash s/h in 2008. Costs tax, insurance and service. c£1,000 / year
The E220 is now at the point where at 8 years & 150000 miles it's going to need some big expenditure. WBAC will be having it soon and I'll replace it with something newer. Probably an M240i or M2. Again, I'll pay cash as I don't like monthly outgoings. My car fund has been growing happily ever since I bought the E class, so paying cash is no problem.

I see this thread as the equivalent of an angel on my shoulder reminding me not to buy a lovely new bit of metal on pcp but to keep topping up the pension....
Whereas everytime there is an article or post on the new Defender or some equally desirable german/jag/Volvo super estate or coupe the devil on my shoulder says "PCP IT TO THE MAX.."
Currently the angel is winning to the tune of a completely depreciated Scooby and an expendable Suzuki. With tax relief, the equivalent of a PCP that I put in the pension is probably the equivalent of a new 3 series every three years before any increase in fund value. Boring or what!
At some stage I do hope that the devil wins otherwise WTF am I doing on Pistonheads....
