Maybach 62 V12 (2004) - £58,950
anyone plotted the depreciation curve?
Considerably better than that of a contemporary S600 L in percentage retained terms.http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m...

If the 'box goes, just bin it. Actually, more likely to be killed off by its ABS ECU failing, so long as he's not the type to bang it into reverse while it's still going forward. As you say, there is no version of man maths that makes the newer car "worth" it. But, hey, it's only money

Well this is the problem, in a given year to breach the annual slush fund limit to 'kill it off' you'd need a duff gearbox on top of many other forms of bork all in one go (and we've been past the gearbox woes). And if/when they do go, you tell yourself oh I'll fix xyz because right at that moment you may not find a barge in the right condition and price to replace it at short notice, so you fix it 'to buy some time'. And when the nice cars come up, you're in peak trouble free motoring so you stick, and the cycle repeats. The sad thing is if he could drive a manual I'd have said to get shot years ago and into an E39 M5. So, when he decides to twist, what would you be on the hunt for? Something like an E65, or Alpina B10? Never had a Merc but a W211 E63 or E500 has its own appeal but don't know how much further they have to fall (E63 in particular).Fezzaman said:
would you stick or twist? I'm pretty sure an annual £3k bork fund is pretty excessive for an E39, but would it be a world of hurt in something more modern with your iDrives etc when they're getting on a bit?
I'm a serial car buyer, and addicted to browsing and the general hankering that goes with an acquisitive streak, but I'm going to be contrary here and recommend stick. If he has a known quantity that he - and this is the key bit - likes owning and driving, why change? Buying new cars to replace perfectly functioning older ones is a mug's game from a financial viewpoint, and it's invariably true that the cheapest car is the one you already own.
However, to prove I'm not a complete party pooper, amd if money and space aren't too much of a concern, why not buy an additional car to treat as a weekend fun toy?

If you're going to be in it for the long haul with respect to maintenance/servicing, I wonder if something like an Alpina would be more rewarding (and dareisay deserving) to keep roadworthy.
Possibly, but helluvasight more expensive too. Suspension, wheels, engine, interior bits all like hen's teeth in comparison to run of the mill BMW and vastly more expensive when needed.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
