In NI, yeah, fair enough.

What's worse is when the English vendor proclaims it a 'private plate'. (Not done here, but often seen).

I've seen plenty of tatty old Mercedes on shocking alloys with 'COOL MERCEDES BNZ PRIVATE PLATE L@@K WORTH £££££' type ads over the years.

You're right - they're awful

I forgot to post earlier - I saw an identical barge coming the other way today. A green on green earlyish sacco paneled W124 4 door with rusty arches.

Is this some kind of sign (good or bad)? I *just* resisted the temptation to turn around and chase it down for a photo - it was identical to mine though!

Yep, that really bugs me too.

Love it too! See the listing has ended, anyone here? Has to be up there with the ultimate barge!

I'm afraid not- the BNZ plate came out of Coleraine circa 2001. Barrying at it's best.

Those chromed wheels are a bit gauche, but that interior is lovely... What a barge!

I remember being followed by a brand new one just after I passed my test. My little Punto felt like it'd be minced by those twin fans in that huge grill...

What is "sacco panelled", for the thick among us (I.E. Me)? I see it mentioned a lot on cars of various colours.

It's the plastic cladding found on the lower bodywork of 1980s and 1990s Mercedes, often painted a complementary colour to the bodywork proper. It is named after its designer (and the designer of the cars) Bruno Sacco. The panels can be referred to as "Saccos" for short. Their purpose is to provide short-term protection from minor knocks and scrapes while in the longtime providing a safe harbour for corrosion.

hehe

Thanks for the info, I feel suitably (further) educated. Are they generally more sought after/desirable than non-sacco versions? Style wise, I think they look good but sounds like they may be more of a hindrance that a help.

How about this mini-barge. Seems a bit expensive but I'm struggling to find a nicer one.

What else can threadists think of for a smaller than average barge?

Then that's worse. I've seen quite a few 190s around with BNZ plates over the years.

I know that it doesn't explicitly state the time of registration, but I don't think they should be allowed on an older car as with prefix, suffix and 51 onwards age plates.

I suppose it gives us a clear marker for which older Mercedes to stay away from in the classifieds.

I've sort of lost track of what we have and haven't seen here, but this is a nice early W124. Decent colour. Low mileage, but embarrassing plate.

8-holes always look rather too much on pre-Sacco cars for me, with 15 holes looking a little over-powered on the later cars. Looks nice though, I am a lover of the early cars.

n the subject, this looks very nice:

Fiar opening bid price too even if the BIN is a touch rich. Neville's chosen username raises some questions though!

Looks very classy, but Marangoni tyres are off-putting.

Aside from the obvious 190, an S60 makes a nice modern mini-barge.

I'd recommend having a look at the Lexus IS200.
