I like them, the later Excel is supposed to be a much better buy, some parts pinched off Toyota (gearbox, diff etc?) and a bit better finished - the most reliable Lotus? Used to a lot about below 5 grand, maybe less so nowadays.
W28 gearbox. Toyota Supra mk 2 was being developed at the same time. Mines slowly coming together.alpha channel said:
I don't know about the 850 era Volvo's, came across one earlier on in the year that still looked big even by modern standards (it still made me go Bugger me, that's big!). Sticking to that I parked up my Rover 200 Coupe (Tomcat) next to a current gen Micra when visiting my Mother and the damn thing dwarfed the Rover (shorter, though not by much, but the shear bulk of the thing in comparison...).
Here's a photo of my 850 taken earlier this year. I think that's a Punto parked in front. It does sometimes seem that the Volvo is dwarfed by modern cars but it remains an ideal size with a cavernous boot.carinaman said:
Has the imported 850R got different headlamps and panels underneath?
The panels with the headlamp wipers seem larger vertically and then curve in to fit behind the grille panel of the bonnet. I've never noticed those panels looking so fat cheeked before.
No I don't think so, if you look at it next to a standard 850 they look the sameThe panels with the headlamp wipers seem larger vertically and then curve in to fit behind the grille panel of the bonnet. I've never noticed those panels looking so fat cheeked before.

Thanks. I've never noticed those panels curving inwards either side of the grille before, which is shocking considering the number of times I've looked at the CAR Magazine Giant Test of the Saffron coloured V70R AWD, A6 Avant C5 2.8 Quattro and the Merc. E320 estate. I think the A6 Avant C5 is a great design. I don't care much for the A6 Avant C6. Like the 850/V70, the '90s dimensions of the A6 C5 is better suited to the roads I use.

We all derided the humongus yank tanks back in the 90's, and yet the cars we buy now are huge compared to that era. Comparing the 850 to a Punto being a case in point.
It's a conspiracy I tell you! As cars get gradually bigger in each generation they're planning on building a smaller car underneath it! Remember when the Polo was a small car? It got bigger and bigger and now they have the Up! That will get larger and they'll find something small to put in under that soon!MissChief said:

Cars are getting bigger, however the interior space I find in many new cars I've been in doesn't seemed to have improved. A friends a3 saloon, the back seats feel very cramped another friends c class, sloping roof line again makes it feel cramped inside. Whereas my v70 (p1) has loads of room inside, the load space with the rear seats folded is huge.
Cars are probably getting bigger outside but not inside to improve crash structures and house airbags etc. MissChief said:

interestingly (or not) an Up has a longer wheelbase than a Ferrari Daytona
Agreed! Old French little cars from this period are great.
The white is a bit wedding, but look at the interior! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jaguar-XJ6-Series-3-/152...
