Apologies if this isn't the right place. I was in the process of buying a three digit plate off ebay and the seller sent me a copy of the retention cert. However how do I know its legitimate? is there a way of checking?

Try and put it on a car and you'll soon find out.
We are finding a lot of attempted fraud on those types of plates at the moment. If the price is too good to believe...it normally is!

Is the plate L21 by any chance?

If so, the retention certificate is 100% fraudulent. That plate has been offered for a while now. Total scam.

I bought a 1x1 last year on ebay.

Bargain price of £30K

Strangely enough the seller wasn't keen on meeting up, or doing the deal through a solicitor, nope they wanted a simple bank transfer with no meet up. I then broke it to them that they weren't the owner and proceeded to tell them their certificate was fake and the area where the actual owner lived.laugh
