I've a little thing for a Bertie Basic Jeep Cherokee (boxy one) at the moment, and I'm surprised at how few there are, and how not-bargain-basement-any-more they've become.
Grand Cherokee are still cheap as chips, but less charming. If a cooking Cherokee is good enough for the Fratellis, it's good enough for me.
Buy the Cherokee. The GC was, by comparison, a disappointment. Grand Cherokee are still cheap as chips, but less charming. If a cooking Cherokee is good enough for the Fratellis, it's good enough for me.
Get the 4.0. Anything else isn’t worth a look.
Incidentally, since you mentioned your Clio 172... what’s your view on where’s best bang per buck on french hot hatchery - 172, 182, 200 etc? I’m sorely tempted to get one.

I probably paid too much but I’m good at doing that.....
That looks superb. A really great car, despite a strong price it is put into perspective by what you’d need to spend on anything modern/new and remotely interesting. http://www.mosesgatecarsales.co.uk/detail/285328/u...

I wouldn't say all barges are bangers. There is some stuff posted here which to me is a banger rather than a barge, but I love the ethos, even if not the car.https://www.usedcarsni.com/1989-Mercedes-E-Class-W...
think this might appeal to some thread regulars.
not my E class before the conspiracy theorists arrive. Mine is slightly more modern

By chance, they also look like the odds of me owning one of the runners and riders listed as the next barge.
I'll take a quid on an X308https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

Still would, but not at that price.
After the wife managed to drive the front of the Outlander into the house, I have gone off the idea of paying for a private car and associated insurance...
Timely coincidence that a few pages ago Nissan Leafs/Leaves? we’re mentioned as i’ve decided to swallow a bit more company car tax in lieu of service and repairs of a privately owned dodgem and get she who cannot avoid inanimate objects a nissan leaf with all the crash avoiding and parking accoutrements.
This has bought my little Alfa probably six months for me to get some mileage out of the crisp new mot but naturally, having a range limited electric vehicle means it will be necessary for me to procure a barge for longer family trips in the not too distant future.
Looking forward to having a silent runabout with an absurd amount of electronic gadgetry/buttons to press - I am getting old as the most exciting thing is reacquainting myself with the joys of a heated steering wheel.

I think I've had or driven most of the cheap hot hatches, and the 1*2 is by far the best.In non cup form you get lots of amusing toys so they're comfortable enough to tolerate for a day on the motorway. The engine is a cracker and gives the whole car a pantomime feel of a huge lump in a tiny car. Mine is for sale shortly, got to slim down the fleet ready to move house.
If you're on a really tight budget then a 1.7 puma is incredible value, I bought one for 400 quid and ran it for a year spending about 50 quid on tinkering. It had a fabulous gear knob, and the engine is, again, a cracker.

My 172 doesn’t get used at the moment but when it did it was a fantastic thing really. So lively. Really tactile and responsive and the way it changes line on the throttle made me feel like a much better driver than I am. Excellent fuel economy, but still feels fast, and a great tonal engine that loves being pushed. Cheap parts.
Mine has done 59,000 miles and is unmodified, so is accidentally becoming quite a nice thing, by virtue of most of its brothers and sisters being actively ruined, whilst mine just gets ignored.

The mkI Ka is also a brilliant drive. Miles more fun than expected, or necessary, and I’d choose one over almost anything for an hour’s thrash around the lanes.
Bit bigger, but the late 90’s Primera is also a brilliant chassis, easy to drive hard, and great fun.
So is the mkI Ka while I’m off topic.
