Fantastic thread, that i've burnt through whilst sat in the garden.

Apologies for poor photos, need to update the phone or remember camera when passing again.
Standford bridge on A41 Shropshire, fuel changed to bird food now, seem to remember an armed robbery here many years ago
I used to live in the village behind this petrol station, A couple of friends worked then when operational. They had to run out and fill customers cars. Also very proud of the fact that the air to fill your tyres was free.

I also remember the armed robbery. A couple of neighbours knocking the door asking my parents if they had heard a gunshot. I believe the chap who was shot died.

It must have been 20 years ago now since it closed, if i remember rightly i believe since its closure its been a car dealership twice selling bog standard cheap cars and now as previously mentioned it sells bird food.

The chap who owns the place Dave I believe still lives there and still sells calor gas he loads his pick up truck and delivers locally.

A couple of interesting stories about Dave the owner...

Firstly he once flew his plane under a bridge when the local bypass opened in the 80's. I'll let the photograph do the talking...

Secondly he recovered the car of Sir Stirling Moss when he crashed it a few miles up the road, a recent article about it..

Finally a picture of how it stands today, you can just make out the gas bottles on the right..

You need to repost that image of the plane in the “cool photos of aircraft” thread.

I’m sure his risk assessment identified the potential hazards...

Good crikey. That's the sort of thing I try on GTA, and fail spectacularly. Never mind real life... Kudos!

As we are not exclusively UK based, how about this one, from my neighbourhood...

Looks like a nice place. I wonder if the contemporary cars could fit down the alleyway in the middle.

Drove past that today. The further one north has gone too, it’s now a chippy.

Took this today.
It’s in Coalport, famous for its China.
This pump was the property of W Woodhall Haulage ( from memory so may not have the name correct), their workshop was next door and still stands. The terraced cottage in the background was the company offices and a patch of waste ground behind was the lorry park.

Think Leyland Terrier, Leyland Freighter type stuff at 17 tonnes.

The firm folded sometime in the nineties, the pump is on the High Street, you would have trucks filling up with diesel and cars squeezing past.

This one is Tower Garage in Alderley Edge

Started life as a filling station and showroom and is now a deli/coffee shop still owned by the garage/family. Now listed thankfully!

More info here:

And:

.
I posted the above garage in Alderley Edge a little while ago. Today on the local FB somebody posted pictures of the garage section in an earlier part of its life. From when it was Tower Garages Ltd, a Morris garage:

Point of note - the "Aldeli" in Alderney Edge does serve terrific cake and coffee. A little expensive but we were road tripping...!

I stumbled across this image somewhere else..
Have we had it before?

The address on the side of the truck reads York Road and looks like "Kings X" maybe, which would fit with an N7 postcode. Although I'm not aware of a York Road in that area (York Way certainly)

York Road became York Way in the late 30's - I think this is the building.

https://www.google.com/maps/@51.5427584,-0.125789,...

I also found this which may be the same site (you can just make out the ALFd Bri... along the top

No idea about the background - the closest I could get was "Shpinx Benzin" (note American spelling) but then the trail went cold....

One of the filling stations featured several times on this thread is up for sale:

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/commercial-property-fo...

Sadly with planning for 2 houses, so the old forecourt will be lost forever.

I know the area well and have filled up there several times. I think they are being a touch optimistic to say the least.

Drove past here today, building not as interesting as some in this thread but it's not the usual multi pump, flourescent lit style of the last 30-40 years.

My Sat Nav is a bit out of date so I was expecting not to actually find a filling station there, but it's still going. Old school, I think it may be attendant sevice and the shop looked like it only sold car related products rather than being a mini market

Set streetview to 2008 as the cars are more interesting and better in keeping with the thread

It seems that the famous Markham Moor building with the parabolic roof mentioned some pages back has now reopened as a Starbucks.

Ha! I was there yesterday too and nearly snapped the very same picture for the thread. Decided I'd grab one when I'm back there for work in the week, no need now!
