Awkward design details on production cars

Anything where lights mask other lights. Was about 100 yards behind a Tesla Model 3, the brake lights completely mask the indicator, which looks to be a single tiny LED.
Likewise the DRLs on a Nissan Qashcum completely mask the front indicators which are just inboard IIRC.
From memory I think the DRL turns off when the indicator is in use then back on again afterwards. They are not the only manufacturer that does this.Likewise the DRLs on a Nissan Qashcum completely mask the front indicators which are just inboard IIRC.

The facelift Qashqai does this, but the pre-facelift didn’t and the indicator is really hard to see behind the DRLs.I have also noticed the Model 3 has a tiny rear indicator, which isn’t the easiest to see, it’s LED which helps though.

Mk5 Golf was particularly bad for this.Likewise the DRLs on a Nissan Qashcum completely mask the front indicators which are just inboard IIRC.
Rear indicator completed encapsulated by the circular brake light.

I’m sure there are regulations about minimum distances between certain lights, I’m guessing to aid visibility. It staggers me that some of these light cluster designs get signed off.
Subaru Impreza spark plugs.....
BMW N47 Timing chain.....
Certain models of Peugeot & Renault where the sump bung is recessed which means that all of the oil and all the bits that gather in the sump (on cars which are not regularly looked after) do not drain, I often wonder if this is a built in design to make sure the engine will fail and maybe create sales of parts or even a replacement car....

Only on the models with LED headlamps, the halogen headlamps have in-headlamp indicators and the DRL's stay on

I may be correct in saying the manufacturers already have the facelift designed before the original arrives onto the market?
The styling will be frozen about 18 months before production. So, unless the facelift is coming out very quickly, that's not the case. The engineering - depending on the level of facelift - will be started before the initial product gets to market.

I have a feeling that originally both MB and Vw wanted the logo to be illuminated aswell but wasn’t it stopped under some EU regulation to do with unnecessary light pollution or something ridiculous like that? I suppose it would look better if it had gone all the way across The New Nissan Ariya has an illuminated Nissan Emblem but it goes off when you drive the car.

You’re right on the LED lamp, but wrong on the halogen headlamp. From memory I think the DRL turns off when the indicator is in use then back on again afterwards. They are not the only manufacturer that does this.

On the halogen lamp the DRL dims to the brightness of the side light when the indicator is turned on to improve the visibility of the indicator bulb.

Citroen gave up trying to flog big cars here years ago unfortunately.
Read yesterday that Citroen is going to sell the DS9 here, and it went on sale on Thursday, I can't imagine they'll sell many at all, maybe 3, but I quite like that they're giving it a go. If I had the money and was looking at a big saloon, I think I'd have a look. carlove said:

The C6 was sold when saloons were still popular, I've not got high hopes of the DS9 outselling the 5 Series, but I do agree, those that get sold will be a good purchase in a few years.

Just walked past a golf plus - really odd design of the front windscreen - rather than being flush it’s recessed at the bottom - must be an aero reason for it so I wonder how hideous the aero must be for this to be needed
I've noticed the same on the SEAT Altea. I've always assumed this was due to the wipers parking vertically. Perhaps the Golf Plus was based on the Altea, though it's worth noting that the Golf Plus' wipers park horizontally.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
