Really ? Thought it would be worth more - you see a lot of 100K+ mile cars, multiple owners, naff service history for around that price ?

Worth a lot more because of service history and mileage or still an 18 yr old Ford so this history doesn't add much on ?
I'd say go in strong to start at £2,500 - you'll likely get above £2,000 anyway, as it's a low mileage, well looked after ULEZ compliant car.

Busy shed week in our house.

The Vauxhall combo van you may remember put a rod through the block. I’ve had it since 19k miles, it’s now on 167 so didn’t want to loose it.

The local breakers had a 70k engine for £200 inc vat with 3 months warranty, my mechanic charged £200 for the swap. Got it back on Monday, done 200 miles and it’s running better than ever. It’s factory lpg and even that is working perfectly on the new engine. Great value repair as many would pay £400 for an oil change on a Merc.

The newer 2008 avensis (which is low mile and immaculate) someone drove into the side of the wife. Not looking as they pulled out of a side road. Damage is rear bumper and quarter panel, mostly paint but one dent.

Insurance company wrote it off as it’s over 8 years old and damage on more than 2 panels. They admitted full responsibility so I’ve zero excess to pay. Payment agreed at £3k for the car. I’m buying it back as “salvage” for £300 and I’ve a repair quote for £300. So in an inconvenience but financially worked out well and no one was hurt. They didn’t even lift or inspect the car. Just looked at a photo.

The 2001 avensis marches on with zero issues as usual, 1800 miles last month due to it being relied on more.

Lovely stuff. Did very well to get £3k for the Avensis in the current market.

It helped that I only bought it for 3k in January and had the paperwork to hand. I paid over as it was absolutely immaculate and sub 70k.

What engine do you have In your avensis('s)?

I'm looking for an estate at the moment, I'll probably go with the 1.8 petrol but may miss a bit of diesel torque. Some swear by the older diesels and some say they have issues, I think the newer ones are BMW so probably not for me.

Well got a new multimeter delivered today - it's 12.05 V so thats 50% dead/alive ?

I guess if I drive the car back to Halfords it's going to be higher so they might not see a problem with it ?

I do hope that this is the issue - don't want to give up on the car yet !

Even I, skinflint personified would be thinking I might give £800 - £1000 for that.

Didnt do bad for £100 and about a year and a bit of driving if my memory serves right. Its been replaced with a 1k leon, she likes it and i love it biggrin 2004,very clean, 74k miles & full mot. Got a bit off asking price as theres a couple of bits but seem like a good buy. Will get a photo smile

Wow, is your local mechanic available to do engine changes for me for £200. That's a complete bargain. I work on the spanners almost all the time, and it takes me the best part of 3 or 4 days to change an engine and get it running nicely. Day to remove, day to swap the componants, fit a new clutch, cam belts etc, a day to put it back, and a day to check it all over to make sure it's reliable and not fretting on wires or pipes etc. That's a comfortable time, with some tea drunk in the period, but it's not relaxed.

The 2008 one is a 1.8. It drives well, it revs out nicely and does 45 on a run 35 about town. The early ones used oil but they cured it about 05. It’s a very reliable engine with no weak points and will cover massive miles.

The 2001 is a d4d, despite identical hp it drives better due to full torque from 1800 rpm. And does 55mpg no matter how it’s driven.

Those engines are coded 1CD-ftv and ran till 2005 before being replaced by the 1ad.

The older engines are very reliable. The clutch and duel mass flywheel are the only expense you’re likely to have. I’ve done 100k in mine now over 7 years and had no issues with injectors or anything. It’s well looked after serviced every 8k and injector cleaner every now and again plus decent diesel. Plenty of taxis still going strong here 500k plus. This engine was fitted to the first 2 or 3 years of the second generation avensis from 03-05.

The newer engines from 05 the 1ad had some head gasket issues. They also moved to a chain from a belt. It seems random if you are affected. Toyota extended its he warranty to 7 or 9 years at the time which has obviously expired now. They cured it in 09. By which stage you’re into the 3rd gen avensis which again is reliable bar the electric handbrake which is the best part of 1k if it goes. I think there may be a cheaper fix out there now but I haven’t researched it.

He’s fixed rate for engines on older stuff. £100 out £100 in. He’s very good too, just not fast. Thankfully I’m not relying on getting stuff back fast so don’t mind and let him work away at his own pace. But yeah when he’s quoted £200 I was surprised and wasn’t going to argue any extra expense. But the bill came in £200 on the nose.

Your travelling expenses to Belfast wouldn’t help though biggrin

Assuming they have a battery tester, they will be able to check the cranking amps, and spot dead or failing cells.

Yes, they test on current apparently and their machine also performs some tests. Said it was 95% good but suggested a bit of a recharge which would make sense.

Haven't seen it since said MOT however as it's currently out on loaner duties with my sister.

Just the sheddy XC70 to worry about now.

Excellent, that's all really helpful, thank you!

I had my eye on a 2011 1.8 but will investigate the electric parking brake further and start looking at some of the older ones including diesels.

Sounds like yours have treated you very well which is great to hear!

Is this the 1.8VVT in this?

If so, they seem to leak from particular places I have found, good strong engines though.

(Oil cooler seals) - oil will drop onto manifold and stink a little when warm...

(Rocker cover gasket) is a very common one, and almost a serviceable item I have found on mine, as mine is leaking again after 20,000 miles or so, this also drops down eventually...

But, in shed fashion I would leave it unless it's a MOT issue, or if it's actually leaking a lot and your checking the dipstick now and then.

I'm sure I have oil being pushed through my exhaust on my 1.8VVT Vectra, as it's getting a nice black smudge around the rear bumper exhaust exit area, with it being always dirty you can see it....not sure what that may be, it still plods along quite merrily.

Look, either love it or get rid of it. We've had 400 pages and 4 years of you pondering it's demise, and thinking to get something else. So, in the interests of being an internet warrior (worrier), I have decided to give you some advice, and I would advise that you get off the bloody fence.
None of this, 'yeah but what can I replace it with' rubbish. It's been going on for long enough. Marriages have come apart quicker than your love / hate relationship with the sheddy V50. Even countries have come and gone, and your Volvo is has seen more than it's fair share of both monarchs and PM's in its time with you.

So I feel obliged to tell you that you are dithering.

Mind you, I do enjoy your stories of the dither, and look forward to you posting musings over the ongoing debate about the V50, but that is still no excuse for your state of indecision. rofl
