Following on from the V8 dog-carrier love, this is not one I've spotted this Spanish E39 540i Tourer before:

I dislike the wheels. The M5 and M nonsense would need to come off. Ideally the trim would be switched to walnut, which would make the gear lever look much nicer.

Being an 02 it should have Isofix in the back too, so the perfect family wagon.

Should be haggle-able into thread budget, right?
Agreed about the wheels. But stripped of its dubious M-ism adornments and with a tidy set of M Parallels under it and it could look very nice altogether

"Best" does not mean cheapest. In any case, go and buy a new C1, load it up with some options, and see what the depreciation is over the next few years (MAN MATHS!). Pays for a lot of barge repairs!
Or just go and buy a C1. You will then be driving a C1. That is all.

A 2002 540i with 144k miles for £5,500? I'm thinking this should be in the "overpriced cars" thread. I do like an E39 (especially wagons), and I'm a big fan of BMW's 4.4 V8 of the era, so much love, but not at this price.

It's a £3,500 car, all day long... But five-and-a-half-large? Nah.

I figured this was the best place to ask this...

W211 E Classes. I really like these - a nice dark red with small wheels would look really anonymous yet a nice place to eat up miles inside.

Are there any engines to avoid? I assume most are diesels, but are there any petrol options? eBay shows the odd E200 but nothing >2l. I’ve never seen a rusty one, so was that sorted out before the introduction of this model? Major pitfalls?

Many thanks!

With apologies to CDG as I'd been looking for a 124 cab I somehow ended up blowing thread budget. The beige 190 is lovely - it's the car I seem to always end up driving.
More required on the G. And an update on the 190!
The 190 has cost me more money ( in true thread style) than expected. A service plus suspension bits plus most painfully a new air con condenser and 4 new tyres adding up. I've got a new set of wheel trims to go on and some scratches etc to sort out plus mats/carpets ( hard to find originals now I think) and it will be in lovely condition.

I wasn't planning to get a G Wagen but a g500 RHD came up and the timing was right as my 129 Has just been sold by Edward Hall ( very nice people - they have some lovely cars there and good knowledge) and the money was burning a hole. Much to Mrs Nickod's chagrin it was bought. First impressions it's the best built car I've ever owned ( 129 comes second) and surprisingly quiet. I'd like to go to full clear Windows and retrim in cloth( probably will get flamed for that in some quarters) I will probably do the Windows if it doesn't cost a fortune.

If it drives as good as it looks, upper thread budget for a 2005 S4 is most certainly good value. Good spot.

Nice in principle, but very firmly sprung and the manual sits at (iirc) >3k RPM at a 70-ish cruise. The auto is geared appropriately for a bit more waft.

The C1 is a great car at its function, but to think of it as a barge alternative would make you soft in the head!

The best looking large car, in my opinion. Lovely, comfortable and quick.

I barge half way to work and cycle the rest. I was cycling home the other night through the badlands of South London and I saw a curious car, it's the second time I've seen it. The first time was a few months ago, I tried to take a video but it was too dark to make out the reg plate. This time I just noted down the number.

It was a pre-facelift S124 E200 (or 200E, I forget which), quite scrappy looking.

The reg number: LN03JXA

How can this be?
the reg doesn't work in the mot check
Works here.
Vehicle MERCEDES 200 TE

What a ridiculous price, that's before even getting to the tat that's plastered all over it.

The problem with thread, and has been from day one, and 10 volumes back is that a best smoker barge seems to indicate it is a cheap thing to run. It's not. So the word Best is completely out of place.

It might be to buy and then will statistically cost more to run over the next 20 000 miles than a small Citroen C1 diesel that does 60mpg and can be chipped ! smile When something goes wrong, like the engine, it's cheap to fix.

I guess that is not sexy though.

What this thread should be called is

MEN WHO LIKE CARS TRY TO MAKE ANOTHER EXCUSE FOR GETTING ANOTHER CAR TO STROKE THEIR CAR FETISH WHILST THE WIFE EITHER NODS HER HEAD SAGELY OR JUST LEAVES YOU FOR A VEGETARIAN LIBRARIAN WHO RIDES A BIKE AND HAS NO BELLY PAUNCH.....

biggrin

This is just a mutual masturbation session for men who should know better.

Continue wk wk wk for the next 10 volumes .....

Now looking forward to

"I bought an M5 E90 and using chip fat oil has cost me less than 20p over the last 14 276 miles. I also have 3 wives"

Wow, a car advertised as a limousine is actually a limousine. Shocker!

Normal service resumed - it's not also a hearse.
