Best of the Bargain Basement (Vol.3)
Discussion
no MOT mentioned and visible no reg plate makes me wary.
Not the most powerful v6 in the world but they sounded ok and at least its manual.
2001 Galant V6 manual, 144k miles with 6 months MOT £995

I think my shed has turned into a keeper. A 12 year old Kia estate should never be a thing of desire but its just good at what it does and that happens to be what I need from a car.
But it's now had all of its suspension and bushes replaced, and with 4 new tyres it feels better than some nearly new hire cars I've driven recently.

Toying with the idea of barge for six months whilst waiting for the right car to come along. At this price what’s going to be the better bet?
Shed of the week GS300? Or a W210 E430?
After chatting about SOTW with a friend the talk fell to their Mercedes. No history but they’ve owned it a for the past few years. Everything works, electric windows, sunroof, climate etc, but it has some rust underneath the headlights and the suspension mounts are showing the first signs of rust. I know the V8 waft will be nice but the smart money is on the GS300 right? Going to view both cars today.

They’ve been honest about condition and at this price it’s hard to be picky so think as I type it out the GS300 makes more sense if it’s as good as it sounds.
I am a Merc lover but I would go with the Lexus. The E430 engine (same as the S430) was ruined by the typical accountants and is not a patch on the previous E420 V8. They even put less valves in the head for improved fuel economy!Shed of the week GS300? Or a W210 E430?

Just made it more complicated and it probably has that pesky air suspension.
Lexus. Reliable as grandmas tea.
Not many E420 around.
What do you reckon on this Fiat Panda? I think I could get it near or at £1k.

Currently doing about a 35-40 mile round trip, 3 times a week on rural winding national speed limit roads. Pretty much all it would be used for, although it has a tow bar....so, y'know... I could tow stuff to the tip or whatever.
Have to sell another car and looking for its replacement. Freeing up cash and going in this more 'fiscally aware' direction has just occurred as a possible way forward.
£160 to insure, fuel efficient and £30 tax for the year is mental!

You either "get" Pandas or you don't. I get them, so much so that we've had three. One of them was identical to that except it was an Eleganza model, so nicer seats, alloys, bluetooth etc.
Personally I think the 1.2 suits the car a lot more than the diesel, but they're nippy, characterful little cars. I'd have another one tomorrow.
Backboxes and rear suspension/brake components rot badly. Electric steering can fail and is a £500 replacement. EGRs get clogged because they do a lot of pottering around town. We had a wheelbearing go on ours but I don't think that is a common thing. Other than that, not too much to go wrong.

Underpowered, it would appear we never got the 2.0-litre version?
