Love this - my mate's dad had a 518 in the 80s when I was a nipper that we regularly had lifts in. B'stard Child said:
The rocker cover gasket leaks are really age related rather than poor design - they get old and brittle - all these modern BMW V8 engines run really quite hot (114-116 deg C from memory) this really bakes the rubber gaskets
The coolant system suffers similar age related failures with heat effects on plastics
I enjoyed 14 years with my E38 740i although I laid it up for a few years which didn't help with some things - it went to another PH'r
M60's don't run at the high temps - they have normal 85-88ish degree thermostats. The coolant system suffers similar age related failures with heat effects on plastics

The later M62 engines were designed to run at the bonkers 115 degrees which hardens and shortens the life of the coolant system plastics but the engines can also can be run at the similar high 80's by fitting the M62 E31 Gulf Region thermostat to the M62B44 engine or by fitting the E38 740d thermostat to the M62TUB44 engine. Both thermostats are simply bolt on replacements and in my experience don't affect the mpg at all - the later (c2003 onwards M62 engines) may need a resistor fitting to the loom thermostat connector as they have a later firmware that can detect when the thermostat is unplugged.
Google is your friend - loads of M62 V8 owners are doing it without issues.

Wow.All this daft pricing, and yet probably less than £20k could bag you the ultimate “one car for life”. You can keep that diesel Merc with the stupid neon interior.

For those wanting to try an integrated approach to in-car tech upgrades, xcarlink seem to have most bases covered. I found them as I was looking to sort out some sort of smart phone mirroring on my e39 without having to go down the upgraded headunit path. They even have aLexus solutions page...
That's a great recommendation, thanks. It seems they might have something which will fit my 130i which doesn't mean chopping the dash up to fit a double din stereo.I still have it all in the loft somewhere - not sure whether the electronics would all be the same as in your 130i if you did go down the new stereo route?

Advice required please, gents.
I have had a man round for the welding required on the XJR which thread may remember came from NI.
We're looking at approx £800 or so for welding and then I reckon another £500 for the other MOT bits required, and a full service.
It stands me at £2500 up to this point.
So should I stick with the original plan of using the car for parts to put the engine on to a trailer in order to run it up whenever I like?
Or should I get it on the road?
If I have to sell it, £3500 looks to be the minimum going rate for an X308 XJR.
It has sensible miles and bodywork is in good condition, too.
Anyway, all advice appreciated.

Love the look of that green E28, just missing a bigger engine.
In other barge related news, I was loading my boot with shopping in a relatively empty Tesco car park this afternoon. The wind was absolutely howling.
The barge gods were definitely smiling on the S211 S600 which had been carefully parked all by itself, fifty yards away. I watched in horror as a big trolley was blown down the car park at an astonishing speed, straight towards the Merc.
At the last second, another gust of wind took the trolley off course, missing its intended target by a few inches and pushing it off towards the filling station, finally ending its journey in the hedge next to the dual carriageway.
Phew.

Very.Had a poster of a 500 on my wall back-in-the-day.
I'm in no way brave enough but sounds like its been looked after, and a full sheet of passes on the MOT - Nice.

Well the CL may be moving on apparently my second speeding notice has dropped through the letter box today, Prompting Mrs 316 to remark I need to get something slower
Or use the power you have more wisely! Thanks for the advice, all.
Going to take a look in the car for the service history and see how that looks before deciding 100% to have it sorted.
BRG as well, best colour.
