New Cars - is Leasing going to become the new norm?

A contractual obligation to pay for a service for the term of the contract is not the same as a debt. If you sign up for gym membership with a minimum term, it's an obligation but not a debt.
That's splitting hairs, it's the commitment that matters.Dr Jekyll said:

Do you count renting a house/flat as being in debt? It's a contractual payment each month after all too.
If I'm committed to it for a period yes. If I'm staying in a hotel with a bill to pay when I check out that's a debt as well. What on earth is the practical difference between leasing and committing to the same payments to repay a loan?

Where's the debt?
36/48 X £150 seems like "debt" but of course lease jockeys are Debt blind! Have you struggled to pay in the past, hence your disproportionate hate of the subject?
Also, he used to have his personal details on his profile - cars owned, job, etc, etc, but took that all off when he realised that people could use that against him, when he was using their history against them to try and get a cheap laugh

You can now see who the target customer is for Merc by the chintzy crap they have been throwing together for quite a few years now.
Tailgate open and balloons with foot high £299 per month written on the doors so the lease addicts can see where their next fix is coming from!
You really must live in a chav area - you were telling us how your friends and neighbours all leased and tried to "keep up with the jones", now you're telling us the local merc dealer has to use balloons and bunting to attract the locals in.Tailgate open and balloons with foot high £299 per month written on the doors so the lease addicts can see where their next fix is coming from!
Have you thought of moving? Or can you not afford to? I'd be happy to chip in if it helped make you less bitter?

I had a feeling.
ETA: isn't PCP like getting fully reamed compared to the 'evil' of leasing?
He just likes getting a reaction and has to resort to more and more "banal" statements rather than accept hes just irritating people and getting in the way of an interesting debate among the grown ups.ETA: isn't PCP like getting fully reamed compared to the 'evil' of leasing?

Anyway, back on topic!
Indeed.Funny, i was listening to the radio today and an advert for a merc came on and they didnt even mention the price of the car (or i dont recall that they did) just the deposit and monthly payments.
It was still a PCP type deal but i thought it interesting that there was no headline price figure or even a £x,xxx off price offer.

Can't remember the last radio advert I heard for any car which mentioned the headline price, almost all car marketing nowadays focuses on the monthly payment.Funny, i was listening to the radio today and an advert for a merc came on and they didnt even mention the price of the car (or i dont recall that they did) just the deposit and monthly payments.

At which point it becomes a debt, up until that point it's merely a liability, just like renting a house, a gym membership or even the contract on your iPhone
A mortgage on the other hand is a debt as you've borrowing the money and are then paying it back.
Speaking of phones - surely the way most people pay a monthly payment and get a new phone every couple of years is a convenience thing, and with most other things being paid that way, maybe a leased car is the answer? A mortgage on the other hand is a debt as you've borrowing the money and are then paying it back.

Is a mortgage not debt either?
Where have we got to in this world when people want to dress debt up into anything but not want to call it DEBT!
Like your debt with the PCP deal on the Q5?Where have we got to in this world when people want to dress debt up into anything but not want to call it DEBT!
And if it wasnt the Q5, it certainly was on "a" car you've owned.

You really like making up wee stories to make yourself seem important don't you?Have you thought of moving? Or can you not afford to? I'd be happy to chip in if it helped make you less bitter?
I don't know how my friends fund their cars and never mentioned bunting, why would I be bitter?
"When I can walk my dogs and choose when to work, not being in the rat race anymore!" oh that was what you said before your car dealing empire came crashing down around you and you had to PCP a second hand golf to commute 100's of miles a week!
Found where I said I had a PCP on a Q5 yet?
It wasnt an empire, it was one bloke flogging cars. I wound it down when i got back into IT.
And i'd a golf diesel because i commuted a heady 43 miles to work and it took me an hour. Oh the humanity! Great job though so was worth it, and great experience. Which nicely give me the niche skills to get into....
Contracting - i make decent money and i have very little hassle. Just negotiated one day a week working from home too. So even less hassle.
See - i'm not afraid to talk about myself because i've nothing to hide or be ashamed of.
Clearly you cant do the same.

What do you mean let it be?
Are you taking the bet or not?
A big IT contractor like you shouldn't be worrying about £1k bet ,or no balls?
So are you denying you've ever had a PCP deal on a vehicle? Are you taking the bet or not?

A simple yes or no will suffice.
Its not about betting its about being honest with yourself.

A simple yes or no will suffice?
Or maybe a simple apology for telling lies?
Simple question. Simple answer.
I think the phrase is "its time to piss or get off the pot" - ie, confirm you've NEVER had a PCP deal, or stop winding people up and fking up threads.

No problem if you agree to pay £1k to my charity of choice if you are wrong about the Q5?
Its not about being right or wrong about the Q5, its the principle that you come along and fk up threads like this, when the truth is you've had PCP deals on vehicles in the past.Quite frankly, you're a wind up merchant, who gets off on being a prick and fking up otherwise interesting debates.

I think leasing will continue to be around, probably to a greater extent.
Having kids? Want a safe, no worries white good to cart them around?
Golf estate, rinse and repeat in 2 years.
easy peasy.

Thus why i think leasing will become the new default option, surpassing PCP deals on new cars.

Is this a fking wind up?
You spend pages and pages trolling the thread pissing everyone off, as you always do, and then agree go against everything you have argued about?
Or are you being sarcastic and just on a fking wind up again?

Where have I been arguing that lease deals are not going to be the norm?

It would be interesting to know the most popular term people choose. 48mths would leave me a bit uneasy, 24mths would probably be my preferred if I were ever to lease.
Would be interesting to hear which in the main is the most profitable for the manufacturers too.
In theory, the longer the period, the lower the payments, but i guess that has to be balanced off with what people who use leasing want.Would be interesting to hear which in the main is the most profitable for the manufacturers too.
If 24 months were to become the norm, that would mean more younger cars on the market and people refreshing their cars more often than they would have done on PCP or HP deals.
