"You can test drive if you put a deposit down afterwards"
Discussion
What is the way that a salesman 'qualifies' a person? I imagine this is the most important thing when deciding whether to give a test drive/extended attention? I'm an easy person to sell a car to, by the time i've got to the showroom i know pretty much what I want and normally what i'd want to pay too. I've never given a second thought to what I wear when visiting a showroom and i've rarely felt i'm being looked down upon, so how do salesmen know i'm serious?

They can smell fear and bullst. Like me you obviously don't give off either odour. oj121 said:
I went to view a car and an apparently well reputed and now massively advertised 'family' firm in Peterborough. I arranged the test drive and had it all pre booked prior to my arrival. I took my parents with me as they were visiting at the time too. Spent 30 mins going over the car before I even took it out. Went in to say I was happy and ready to take it out when I was told 'you cant take it out unless you buy it'.
WTF!!!!!!
Suffice to say I walked out and went down the road and bought the same car from a different place.
Just a Stebb ing the dark, but i think i know the placeWTF!!!!!!

I'm not keen on this what's your lowest price malarkey, as ideally the lowest price would be the one I put on my advert.
The odd thing is that those who ask for a seller's lowest price don't seem to believe it either since their next move is usually to make an offer lower than the lowest one that they've just been given.I went to see a BMW in an independant dealer in Leeds some time back. I looked the car over, checked out the service history etc and then asked if I could test drive the car.
Salesman:"Are you going to buy it?"
Me: "I don't know yet"
Salesman: "Well you can only test drive it if you agree to buy it"
Me: "Ok, how much can you come down omn the price"
Salesman: "Nothing, it's perfect and has a FSH etc etc"
Me: "The history isn't full, it's missed it's last inspection 2"
Salesman: "The price isn't negotiable and you can't test drive it unless you agree to buy it"
At this point I thanked him and walked out.
No I wasn't smartly dressed, but i'd turned up in a similar car that was 3 years older so obviously wasn't just chancing my arm.

I'm nice to people. People are nice to me.
If people are not nice to me, I'll not give them my attention in the future.
Insert into any situation you like.
For the purpose of this thread - If someone wants a deposit before I can drive a car I want, I'll politely challenge their reasoning. If i don't like what I hear, then i will make excuses and leave. If they have a valid point, or are willing to change their mind after a quick discussion, then I will stay.
Genuinely speaking though, I find if I am polite, I'll get good service wherever I happen to be. I don't expect people to bend over backwards for me, just treat me with respect, as I will them.
That's madness. You can't possibly buy a car without huge amounts of indignation, cowtowing of staff or waving of the wad. If people are not nice to me, I'll not give them my attention in the future.

Have never heard of this, i have only bought 3 cars from dealers, 2 of those times got a test drive after 5 mins of looking at the car with the salesman as a passenger, and one of the times the man just chucked me the keys, said take a look around it and take it for a spin, and he went back into his office.
I wouldn't personally leave a deposit to test drive a car.

I tend to get offered a test drive before I need to ask.
Typically I give the car a quick look over for 5 mins and then ask for the paperwork and go through that for 10-15 minutes asking any questions if needed. I then go back to the car which is when the dealer will normally come back to me, if I fancy taking it out I just say that I like the car and then that's when the test drive offer will be made. Most of the time I just get thrown the keys and I go out alone.
Even at main dealers I get offered test drives that I normally decline as I'm usually just window shopping in these instances.

While it may be important for some to get the lowest price, when I buy a (new) car, I want to buy from a dealer that I feel will also provide good quality service/servicing in the years to come. Some here seem to consider the purchase process as some kind of proof of their masculinity, for my part, service quality is far more important than getting a couple of hundred pounds more discount. Common sense tells you that a salesman who insists on deposits for test drives isn't going to belong to a dealership where long-term relationships are considered important.

The salesmen all laugh at you if you over-pay though.Motorrad said:

The ones that will are the ones earning nothing.
Or like the guy who sold me a brand new Mustang at $12K off list he makes his unit target/finance target (even though it was 0%) and triggers his bonus even if he's selling at around dealer cost.I was at a dealership today, whilst I waiting I over heard (ear wigged if you like) one of the salesman going through his patter with a young woman looking for a car, after about 5 minutes he said right what we need to do is take you out for a test drive.
Some of you guys are doing it all wrong, if you can't get a test drive.
