I've got a bad back and my Jag never leaves me in pain. Even after 5 hours at the wheel. My old Saab 900 is the same. Citroens are the worst for it.

The only car that never gave me a sore back when driving long distances was a caterham 7 with custom made seats and nitron dampers

Brands hatch to Aberdeen in total comfort

Well apart from the cold head, cooked left leg and deafness

My back has caused me problems on and off for years and so far Volvo comes top of any car I have driven.

Current BMW e90 is ok (2006) but a recent spell in a newer 2011 E91 put me in pain within two weeks - seat seemed to be adjusted exactly the same too.

I did ponder just getting a recaro seat as I assume you can take it from car to car - which is probably cheaper in the long run.

An auto Volvo though - perfect, I miss my V70 very much in that respect as it was so easy to get the seat in a good position.

A friend of mine has a bad back and she got advised to get an auto as using a clutch (especially in traffic) can be hard on lower back issues.
This is good advice I think. I'm considering swapping back to an auto due to a bad back.... I find my back is always worse after driving if I get stuck in any kind of stop-start traffic.

Volvo seats are the most comfortable I have ever sat in... S-type Jag seats are great too but I don't rate those in the X-type much, although those are both old models now anyway.

Anything not too hard or soft with good support and a high back-rest is essential for us taller drivers. Also extra leg room makes a big difference IME.

I slipped a disc in my back some years ago. The specialist I saw asked what car I drove and then suggested this di not help. I now follow his advice when chosing a car. Make sure the pedals are in line with the seat and the wheel. Many high end cars have offset pedals and wheels also not in line. What this means is you sre sitting on an angle operating the pedals at another angle and steering at another.
After treatment I have had no issues with a Jag xtype or Mazda 6 new shape.

I'm a fellow sufferer as well, 6'2" and had a broken back - I was advised, being tall with longish legs that the height of the seat base was important, so I currently have a Zafira (company hack), I find most saloons virtually undriveable due to the low seating height. Experts have told me Saab or Volvo seats though, so XC60 perhaps? Auto is also good, especially if doing stop/start.

As for the Chimaera, I just put up with it 'cos I loves it!

As a result of an accident I have a pretty bad back. My e39 was great but what I now find is the actual gettInv in and out is the issue. A tall car such as a 4x4 makes the in and out much easier.....

An MX-5 is a great car for a bad back.

I didn't have a back problem before I bought one, but I do now.

Sticks.

Me too and know what iy mean but I find getting up into a taller car like a 4x4 difficult.

I'd recommend eectric seats for the smaller increments of adjustability and memory function. Perhaps think about lateral support too, if it's lower back, to keep it in the righgt place. Ditto the clutch/auto comments.

Another vote for a Recaro or a Jag

I'm 6'3" and have never been uncomfortable in a Jag (apart from in the backrolleyes)

Recaro swappable seat is actually a great investment. I'd do this

A friend's mum has a bad back and their family cars have been volvos for a long, long time. She gets on well with those, so they are recommended. I think, at last count it was a V50.

Another vote for Saab. Flipping marvellous... and very cheap, if you're brave.

A large Swede, such as a Volvo S80 or Saab 9-5/9000 should do the trick.

Most cars have a seatback made from a frame and springs stretched across and these are the killers if you have a back problem. I changed the drivers seat in my 306XSi for a Recaro and it transformed it - quite wonderful.

I've driven a 95 for the last 7 years.......
