I loved my 172 cup (but admittedly that was only 3 years old when I bought it), 5 when I sold it. 32k miles without fault - maybe not that relevant now as they are getting on a bit.

However, even then there wwere plent yof high mileage track cars that had very few problems.

Cambelt changes are expensive, otherwise quite simple and straight forward.

Overall - apart from driving position great fun, chepa and not as fragile as I had expected.

I went looking at Clios 172/182s with a firm intent on buying one but the more I looked at them, the more astonishingly flimsy they appeared (and I've owned an R5 GT Turbo in the past so do understand the concept of flimsy) so just couldn't bring myself to buy one. I bought a less powerful Fiesta ST which is hardly an icon in quality construction but way ahead of the Renault.
Me too, drove a 172 and loved the way it went but I gave up trying to find a straight one with proper history. First thing I asked to see was proof the cambelt had been done, a BS story usually followed and I walked away.
