Recently I have had an increasing urge to replace my current day to day car which is a Volvo S80 D5, not at all an exciting car by any means of course...Anyway I was passing a well known used car supermarket to the North of London so I thought I would pop in to see if there was anything that looked interesting. I had a good wander around and out of the 5000 or so cars they have in stock there is hardly anything that looks remotely interesting or different....all of todays cars have almost morphed into a small number of shapes and sizes.
Cars today are more interesting to me than they've ever been, and cars from the 70s and 80s are the most boring a least inspired designs in my opinion. The square and sharp-edged designs always seems like a backwards step to me, but I suppose you could pick examples from any decade that look boring and similar.

Walking into a car supermarket without a specific interest in anything and then saying everything looks the same is like looking at handbags or football strips or whatever and saying they all look the same IMO.
Sorry if I gave the impression that I had no idea what type of thing I would buy, that was misleading. You are probably right about the majority of 70s and 80s cars I would agree as well. It is probably that I have now spent so much time in so many cars that anything for day to day use is going to be relatively boring to fit the requirement anyway. I don't feel the need to always drive something that is brand new either so I guess I have become just too old and sensible and finally the awareness that buying a car always ends up losing you money and that has probably become more important than the other things getting a new car(even used) gives you.

I started the post I suppose in some respects because I was disappointed with myself cos I didn't get that urge to buy one when faced with 5000 or so that were for sale!

I think a lot of cars from all eras were as boring as todays offerings. It's all down to what there seems to be a glut of shape wise during the period. I have a few cars I use on a regular basis, most of which would be considered boring back in the day but now are considered 'cool' though it's not really explainable is it? My E28, W124, Fiesta MK2, were all as boring as hell, my Saab 900 Classic Turbo may have been a bit quirky but not really a cool car in it's day either.

Its only going to get worse, i can see the classic market going from strength to strength as people loose interest in the modern stuff.

I disagree about the 900, specifically in Turbo 16S-form, as that was always a 'cool' car back in the 80s IMO

Just get the Honda CRZ. Everything will fit in it with a bit of willpower.

The CR-Zs seem to be very good value all of a sudden!
