Parking a normal size car in a normal size single garage.
Discussion
I have about 1 inch gap either side of the mirrors through the door. You can probably see a wooden chock to stop me going too far forwards. I also have this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252471571377 on the wall to protect the door. In white to match the walls...

I've been looking into this. Seems even my 20 year old 5-series will be very tight in a standard UK garage.
single council garage + Audi A6 (C6 - 2006) = very tight squeeze the only real solution was to approach it as a dog leg and get around the metal rubbing strip for the up and over door and get as close to the n/s wall as possible without causing any damage.
I used an old memory foam mattress against the front wall to drive into and against as otherwise i couldnt have shut the garage door behind and not have damaged the front bumper.
It is possible, just tight
What is it with garages being so small? The house I live in now I bought as a temporary stop until we can buy our dream house in a year or two, and it's a modern house on an estate with a single garage. I've seen worse, but it's not huge. I've had my parents' Range Rover Evoque in there (quite a wide car) and the mirrors, even folded in, were pretty damn close to the door aperture. When it came to my Defender, all was well, except that it was too tall. After bodging the door up a bit, it just fits, but only backwards as the door won't close otherwise.
When I build my own garages I'm going to spec them to accommodate a fleet of LWD Mercedes Sprinters and then no matter what I buy, it'll fit.

Just as they rent a council garage doesn't mean they don't live in a nice privately owned house. The council garage block (12 units) I have a garage in contains some decent exotica including a 911, Renaultsport Spider and a KTM X-Bow ... All of which are owned by people living in privately owned properties ... No need for such conclusion jumping
