Beautiful car, especially in that white but the Mk1 face lift was the best looking capri to my eyes, especially in Group 2 racing.
Just to touch on the power quoted in the article, The Mk1 3.0 had 128bhp and it wasn't until the Mk2 3.0 Capri, that the inlet port was redesigned and a better cam was fitted, lifting power to 138bhp.
In South Africa, the Essex 3.0 was developed beyond its European demise, and it last iteration had electronic ignition and injection, making a genuine 160+bhp, unlike the 2.8i which never really got beyond 150hp and accordingto most tuners, 148hp was the average for a good 2.8i, despite being advertised as 160hp at the time by Ford.
nono ............

although car featured is a pre facelift 1969- aug1972

increase in power came in sept 1972 with the introduction of the MK1 facelift Capri

The earlier versions of V6 Essex engine as fitted to The Ford Zodiac were rated at 128 hp (95 kW; 130 PS) and 173 lb?ft (235 N?m) of torque,

In October 1971 the engine was revised by modifying the camshaft and cylinder heads which improved the power and torque to produce 157 hp (117 kW; 159 PS) SAE or 138 hp (103 kW; 140 PS) DIN at 5000 rpm and 192 lb?ft (260 N?m) SAE or 174 lb?ft (236 N?m) DIN of torque at 3000 rpm.] At the same time, the oil dipstick was moved from the front of the engine to the side, the inlet manifold was improved from earlier models, and the compression ratio was raised slightly from 8.9:1 to 9.0:1 due to a change of the piston design.

at the same time the manual 4-speed external linakage was replaced with the type 5 (internal )

In Germany things were a little different , using the " Cologne V6 "topping the tree from 1970-1973 was the RS 2600 produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) and 219.5 N?m (162 lb?ft).

we had to wait until 1974 for the RS 3100 to get the same spec power increased to 3,098 cc (3.1 L; 189.1 cu in) by boring the cylinders from the 93.6 mm (3.69 in) of the 3.0 L to 95.25 mm (3.75 in).[15] Unlike its predecessor, it used the same double-barrel 38-DGAS Weber carburetor[16] as the standard 3.0 L, and reached the same 150 PS (148 bhp; 110 kW) at 5000 rpm as the RS 2600 and 254 N?m (187 lb ft) at 3000 rpm of torque.

noticeable you got an extra 25 ft lb from the Essex V Cologne V6 for the same HP . i

It was the same with the Capri MK3 3.0S Essex V6 V 2.8i Cologne V6 , The Essex always had more deep down Grunt

With a wee bit of cutting and welding, couldn’t the default rear-end problem solver, XJS IRS, be fitted to a Capri?
You can't just leave that there without a link to the rest of the pictures!

When I passed my test in the mid 1980's, I had a Hillman Avenger, then within a couple of weeks, a Mk1 Escort 1300E.
I stayed with Escorts for the next few years owning around a dozen Mainly Mk2's.
I was curious about the Capri, so had a couple of drives in them, and ermm .... really didn't like them at all.
I thought they were terrible handling, and pulling out of any junction was hard work as you couldn't see anything, unless you were half out the junction anyway.
For the same engine size, they seemed slower, and worse at cornering, than any Escort.
Each to their own of course, and cornering or speed, are not the reason some people buy cars, I get that, but I just saw the Capri at the time, as a bit of a desperate old mans car, clinging onto his youth, and wishing he was a cowboy in the states.
My friend had a 2.8i and it really wasn't as fast as I thought it would be. It looked ok but to me, disappointing in the way it drove.

Much as I love a Mark 1 Capri, my first car was a white one as well, not up for spending 40 grand on one.
prices are silly

I've agreed a deal with mine to a Capri enthusiast he's just got to sort out a trailer been sat in garages since 2006 ,sans engine , gearbox and Exhaust , but a great project at a reasonable price

as she was fitted with a 2.8i turbo technics conversion

That’s purple seventies kustom, yeah it’s pretty terrifying to modern eyes, and probably to a lot at the time.

But, that is a cultural thing of the time, that’s a time capsule, a glimpse into a past I, at 53 only barely remember, and only from the Rod and Custome shows at Belle Vue.

It’s a rare survivor (assuming it’s still around) of that period, as most got built and then just rusted like all cars did. There is a Vauxhall Firenza called “Folies Bergere” which is similarly but not quite as, er unique that someone is restoring, I think to how it was rather than a modern taste.

I love stuff like this, not something I would drive but it’s so cool to see something created back then, we can’t understand it now but was perfectly normal back then, well it was more common.

It’s like the Max Power cars of the nineties, not to my taste but they are marvellous examples of the car, and wider culture at the time.

And who wouldn’t want to offer a Lady a Taboo and lemonade in the back of their Capri of an evening, but of Supertramp or 10CC on the 8 track…Of course the presence of a bar in there would render activities more difficult as a Capri mk1 was always a little cramped in that respect.

I'm after another MK1 Capri , pref a GXL to relive my teenage years . Mine was 3.1 and the engine was built by a guy who built the Bullit's at Broadspeed, was very lairy for the day

Got rid of it more than 30 years ago but still think about it a lot, unfortunately the more I save the higher the price seems to go on them

Mk 1 3.0 auto in red with black vinyl roof and no front bumper was one of my first cars, when insurance was affordable for young fools like me. I lent it to a mate. He parked it under a tree which fell on it, altering the coke bottle styling somewhat.

Jesus, I'd banished all memories of that car! It resided not too far from where I grew up in Tonypandy and would often see it driving around and at local car shows. At 12 I thought it was pretty cool, now I'm much older not so much...

Looks like a Weber IDA 'The Jug', best carb for ultimate power on an Essex, but a bit wasted on a 180bhp engine, plus it's no good on a road car as on part throttle it tries to shovel everything into one bank of cylinders.

Like the look of car though, sits well.
