New Car Woes - Friend in Need - Wrong Specification!
Discussion
Just to add (and apologies if it sounds harsh, but I'm putting this bluntly and simply):
His 320 coupe is completely irrelevant. If he hasn't maintained it or doesn't want to, that's his problem.
His numberplate is no big deal - surely the coupe now has a normal plate on it and should be usable?
And the VAT increase could go either way. I would suggest fighting the lease company over it - at the end of the day they're the ones taking money off him, and it's up to them to argue with their supplier if the car value fluctuates during a cockup like this. I had a similar issue with one or two cars while I was there when model ranges were updated and prices jumped - the lease company just flex a bit of muscle and mention going to Audi next year and BMW will probably let them have it at the old price "just this once".
But really the moral of all this is: go to the people you're paying for a service and make them sort it out. Don't let them fob you off into having to deal with the manufacturer yourself - it's THEIR job, christ they're probably on first name terms with each other. I certainly was.

A few years ago, one of our guys ordered a BMW as a company car just before he left that was like a yellow with a green interior. It went through as the colour names don't make it obvious and he'd left before it arrived. It ended up being used as a pool car.
