Sorry, confusing numbers. To make it worthwhile, purchase price has to be around 10k, probably 5-10 left on loan, not really sure.
I guess what I'm saying is a 30k mile decent condition m140i, owned from new, is hard to justify replacing with an older bargey thing because i) its already quite bargey/quite fast, you know (or can reasonably hope) it won't break.
Do we need a practical car? yeah probably, I have to drive to work each day, it needs to be alright in town, in the winter, and it needs to be able to move occasional big stuff/take stuff to the dump because we've got an impractical ruined old house we're fixing up.
The other side of it all given that at most this would liberate about 5k, I think (although would remove a smallish monthly commitment to be spent on cushions and wallpaper/caulk and filler, woohoo), hardly seems worth it for the certainty/near certainty of not having big (not so bad) and unpredictable (more bad) bills from the m140i.
M135i is a £10k version of what you have. I had an M240i and they are quite frankly absolute bargains in the running costs V performance and anything else (save for the earlier earlier incarnation as suggested by ATM) is probably going to cost in old car titivation added to old fast car running costs. old choose two: cheap / fast / reliable.
Audi S3 may be worth looking at but I don't know the costs, certainly the 3.0 TFSI V6 in the 4, 5 and 6 series is a gem of an engine but it's thirsty.
Maybe 5.5 litre V8 E class estate? They're a sensible price but again, older and thirsty.
I've been through my own series of mental cartwheels on what to get starting with a V10 M6 and I'm not even going to mention what I've decided on but a frustration with constant financial demands from older cars has shaped my choice.

I very, very nearly bought an E21 Alpina rep back in 2006. Really nicely done and back when they weren’t big money, I ended up buying a Ph1 172 instead as an interim trackday car.
I also had this 2002 that I was going to put an E30 318iS engine etc in but I just didn’t have the budget. Shame as would have been a great project -

I had one of those XR2i back in the early 90s so fairly in period, I've always defended the mid 80s to mid 90s "fast" Fords but that one was a duff. I know folk love to slate the CVH but there was nothing wrong with it but the mk3 Fiesta was a step to far for it. Even when I moved up to the Fiesta RS Turbo that had the power and torque it needed the chassis fell apart.XR2i

Those 996 RS though, I can't understand why more aren't used-you still see plenty of 996 GT3s at track days and even 997 RS (some of which are worth more) but the 996 RS just seem to be getting squirrelled away.
I agree about the cvh, really was past its best by then wasn’t it.
Its more a nostalgia thing for me really (isn’t that normally the way) as I remember going through Ford brochures at the time when my parents were speccing their new Sierras and Mondeos back in late 80’s and early 90’s. I remember I would leave the brochure open on the XR/RS pages hoping they may order one.
They did redeem themselves with the last Mondeo that they had the RS springs and alloys fitted, was a great car…..
