RE: Shed Of The Week: Ginetta G31
Discussion
I had one of these a few years ago, not a bad car. The one thing I hated though was the incredibly heavy steering at parking speed. Otherwise it was fun if not terribly well developed, there were a lot of rough edges. I ended up giving it away as it was unsellable even at a 3 figure price.
lovely that, an affordable alternative to an Elan
well, when I say 'affordable'…

What on earth do people see in these? Genuine question.
From what I can see they have atrocious build quality. They use nothing but derivative parts. Always seem like a wannabe Lotus/Caterham/TVR without any of the qualities. And I don't think I've seen any model that has any kind of aesthetic appeal (subjective of course but, well, you know, just look at it!)
Are they just a case of a particular type of nostalgia?
No offence intended!

Track handling on a road car and in the case of the ones listed here the ease to repair. I guess these the lotus exige of their day. This gives a very raw feel to the car, and as other posts have eluded to the ability to tune them with a number of spanners and very few parts. From what I can see they have atrocious build quality. The new Ginettas still have their own racing series, the reason for reusing others parts is similar to todays exige and elise using various engines.
hope that helps

I never knew these existed until this thread but, from the looks of it:1. It's a stripped out, light weight, go-kart of a thing.
2. Communicative, engaging, precice handling (I'm assuming, since it's a Ginetta)
3. Presumably cheap to run and fix - it's a Sierra engine, apparently.
4. Eighties retro looks, in a rat sort of way.
5. Serious rarity value
6. Noisy, raw, and all about the driving experience.
7. Proper sports car badge
8. It won't rust
9. All of the above for less than £1000
I can't think of a better shed of the week.
I love Ginettas and will own one one day, however, aesthetically what I always fail to understandis why they fit obvious donor car rear lights from everyday/common cars which really spoil the overall effect IMO. Nice original body design spolit by obvious Sierra 1.6L lights for example
Not just Ginetta but other low volume manufacturers are guilty ie Marcos, Noble, and some TVR's. i understand tooling costs are high but why not choose low volume donor parts which are not as recognisable, Lotus has done this to great effect and some later TVR's.
A minor point in the grand scheme but one which really spoils it for me when considering these low vol/kit alternatives.

Like it or not, everyone of that era was doing the same, it's only now later on that everyone either uses generic round lights or have developed new items. Personally I agree that in principle just some well-placed round lights look better than something obviously nicked, however all I can think is that back then they wanted the lights to look like they had at least some design features in them, which TBH on cars now seen as retro-chic actually adds to the character! Because they are what they are. SD1 lights on the Esprit are my personal favourite...Not just Ginetta but other low volume manufacturers are guilty ie Marcos, Noble, and some TVR's. i understand tooling costs are high but why not choose low volume donor parts which are not as recognisable, Lotus has done this to great effect and some later TVR's.

People are being too nice about this car. I bet the problems mentioned are just half of it. Not to say the current owner is being dishonest in the advert, just that it's extremely likely that 30 minutes after handing over the wedge and driving off something additional will go wrong, 30 minutes later something else and so on...
I suppose some of the ideas of painting it and sticking in a big engine do sound appealing but when would you ever get around to it and think of all the other cars you could use as a base for that sort of modification.
