One quick look at the attendees of any socialist/left-wing/Labour Party event will show that 'cross' is the default position. The only happiness in their lives appears to be the free lunches.
Aha! How I've missed your posts! Most people at the events you refer to aren't cross, it's more about optimism: wanting to make a difference to the benefit of the country, rather than the narrow-minded, incompetent, self-serving corruption forced upon us during 13 years of Tory misrule, supported by the sorts of people that regard the government's performance as acceptable and appropriate. Voting Tory is for those who have an essential part of their soul missing.

I consider myself to be socialist and certainly more left than right, (the Labour Party at the moment is neither but that's by the by)I also believe that if people have worked hard to earn their fortune and pay their fair share in regards to tax then it's none of anyone's business what they spend their disposable on

Perhaps if you'd done better at life, you wouldn't immediately presume those who advocate for a lower Gini coefficient are all lazy scroungers.
You mean like you presumed that anyone that can afford to spend six figures on a plate must be a tax-dodging crook who is looking to stroke their ego?Perhaps if you'd done better at life, you wouldn't immediately presume those who advocate for a lower Gini coefficient are all lazy scroungers.

Sir Les?
As for taxing plates, deference or self interest always find the exception. Charge an ego tax on plates sold on instead of a slap.
Even better encourage a society where massive ego's, wafeur thin self confidence and massive entitlement are seen as a bit pathetic which and of course they are.
In that society, can we also encourage people not to make snap judgements about others? You know, things like assuming that someone has a massive ego because they bought a personalised registration plate...As for taxing plates, deference or self interest always find the exception. It's funny Sir Les makes an appearance - old numberplates in Australia go for eyewatering amounts.

And for those eat the rich types, in New South Wales people with what's called custom registration (2-6 numbers or letters in any combination) have to pay an extra $499 annually. Those historic two digit number plates in New South Wales cost something like $11,000 to transfer to another vehicle.

Here's an idea.
In a country where 1in 5 people are at or below the poverty line, how about taxing ego car plates? If you can spend money on buying a plate just to stroke your ego, you can afford to contribute to mitigating some of your country's problems. The fewer positions your ego plate has, the more tax you pay. Just two positions? 10x road tax. Three positions: 5x road tax, and so on.
It could be an ego stroking thing in itself: have a short registration, show people you're really doing well, not just for yourself, but also for the country.

If having the plate actually cost £300k I would be more inclined to agree with the sentiment that if some people have so much more money than they need that they can waste it on something so pointless they should probably be taxed more. However, it doesn't cost 300k, it's worth 300k and is likely to remain so. They're not 300k poorer than they were before they bought it, they've just moved some of their money around. In a country where 1in 5 people are at or below the poverty line, how about taxing ego car plates? I suspect the market for a lot of these dateless plates will be vanishing if it hasn't gone already.
The very best will continue to do well, of course, but the everything bubble is over.
I'd love AU1 because I love the film...this will be bought by a bullion dealer or jeweller though, surely?
Six figures it a lot for a whimsy.
I suspect the opposite. People have been calling the private plate market as 'bubble set to burst' for decades, but the truth is the market remains strong. The very best will continue to do well, of course, but the everything bubble is over.

I bought mine when the new style of number plate was announced around 25yrs ago. 2 numbers/2 letters - it cost me £800. Most 2x2 plates now start at 10x that, the cheapest 2x2 I can find with my initials is £18,000. 5yrs ago, both were about half that value.
I've no interest in selling it, but the market remains stronger than ever.

Is a classic car any more necessary than a private number plate? Maybe you should pay some more tax on them. Perhaps if you'd done better at life, you wouldn't immediately presume those who advocate for a lower Gini coefficient are all lazy scroungers.

If you can afford to “stroke your ego” with a garage full of nice classic cars, I assume you’ll be volunteering to pay a nice tax on that ego stroking?
