Enjoyable at the time, and seemed unburstable after a couple of Fords... Had three 1600's inc an early 4-sp GLS, silver with orange velour trim. Oh Yes. Also had a six-dial dash which was damned useful - once oil pressure started going low enough to flick on the light at a warm idle, it was time for another litre. Again.
All were great motorway cars, of their time, capable of sitting at a steady 90 all day, and handled well-enough on their modest 165R13 tyres, though I think the GLS might have had 175/70R13. Reliable too, IME.
A mate had an 86 or 87 SRi, which was clearly the DBs in 1990/1 and we were all insanely jealous.
As a previous poster noted, one go in a 405 at the time and you realised the Cav wasn't top dog. For me, it was a blast in a 405 with the 1900 carb-fed engine - supple, responsive chassis, with a grunty engine and slick (yeah, Vauxhall, slick) gearbox.
Happy for the Cav memories to remain just memories

Weren't both Ford & Vauxhall looking at the business market ( REP MOBILES ) at this time, and leas companies were looking at best economy . Out of the two, (I've had both a MK2 1.6 and a firm's 1.6 Sierra ) and I'd prefer the MK2 anyday . Only problem with my MK2 was head gaskets. But changing them was easy. Cambelt alignment tool ( as in the old Victor engine) was a bit of string. Biggest problem with water pump was placement and fact that it was held in with allen screws .
